      Disadvantages

Get them only if they're for occasional use or for show only.

I fell in love with these Orla Kiely coasters and placemats the moment I saw them. Despite not even owning a dining table, I invested in a set for the day that I would be able to adorn my dining room with these lovely beauties. Considering they're Orla Kiely, they are not that expensive. A set of 6 coasters costs £12 and 6 placemats is £30 from Heal's.

I have been using the coasters for about a year now and I have not been all that impressed, I have to say. Although they are real cork underneath, the top coat seems to be made of some kind of plastic layer, which has cracked quite badly and let water in as a result, leaving them to chip easily and go dark in patches where the spillages have leaked through. Having said that, I have had coasters in the past that have not held up terribly well to use, so I think perhaps this is just the way it is with coasters. The placemats have held up better because they have not had liquids spilled on them and left to sit.

All in all these are beautiful-looking things, but do not expect them to stay pretty for long. I suppose the coasters are cheap enough that it's not the end of the world if they need to be replaced every now and then, but it would've been nice if I could've got a few more years wear out of them before they started falling apart.

Just some factual info for you:
Heal's website states that the coasters and placemats are "designed exclusively by Orla Kiely for Heal's, and produced by Joseph Joseph, the contemporary kitchen and tableware company." They are also wipe-clean, whilst being heat resistant up to 100 degrees.
