Whenever I am having one of those frustrating times wrestling with opening a jar (usually as I need a jam or chocolate spread fix in a hurry), I reach for this opener, and it actually works.
This jar opener is another tool in the oxo good grips series, tools designed for everyone to make everyday tasks either, but also specifically to help people who may struggle. It is made by an American company, more details of which can be found at www.oxo.com .
It costs £4.86 on amazon but I am sure I paid around £3 for my jar opener, which is great value even though it is not something I use every day. The jar opener looks a bit like a spatula - you insert the jar into the metal lined groove on each side of the tool, it grips with one serrated edge, you turn and - genius - even the most annoying and hard to open jar opens with relative ease. The handle is made of rubber with grips so your hand won't slip, even when wet.
My opener has a helpful arrow sticker on it to tell you which way to turn which is useful if you are as clueless as me and trying to open the jar with all your strength and still failing. The way it has been designed means that any size jar will fit and be opened with no damage, it is very clever indeed.
This is a great item to have in your kitchen drawer and I would imagine would also be handy for anyone who suffers from arthritis or impaired strength in their hands, I don't think children could use it without assistance.
I would highly recommend this tool as it actually does what it is designed to do, and perhaps could solve that problem you didn't know you had!
