“ Brand: PME / Product Type: Cake Stand „
Despite baking for a number of years I have only just started to think about making my cakes look fancy so for Christmas a couple of years ago I asked for an icing turntable so I could get professional looking results from my cakes. My lovely brother and sister ind law bought me this little gem (they really do buy the best kitchen based presents for me).
The idea behind an icing turntable is that because it rotates easily you can get a smooth professional finish without the faff of trying to rotate a cake board - I find it particularly useful for icing the sides of the cake.
The turntable itself comes ready made up in its box so it's ready to go straight from the box. Because it is plastic it is also quite lightweight and I also find it doesn't take up too much room in my kitchen. It has a diameter of 9 inches so if you are making massive cakes you will want a bigger one but as I mainly make 8 inch cakes it is perfect for my needs.
I usually put my cake on a board and put that on the turntable mainly because I still don't have the confidence to move a fully iced cake off the turntable and onto a cake board but you can put the cake straight on the turntable and you would get a slightly better finish that way and if I am displaying it on a cake stand I put it straight on the turntable. The turntable also comes with little black dots on it which can be used as a guide for where to put the cake and I suspect helps it grip better but I am not sure. When you are using it I find that it moves really easily without sticking at all and I find you can move it with one hand while smoothing the icing with the other so it makes for a smooth continuous finish which is ideal. You can also see easily all the angles of the cake to check your handy work so you don't have to strain your neck or spend ages moving the cake board around. You could also serve the cake on the turntable as it looks similar to a cake stand and I guess the fact that it turns makes it a bit like a lazy Susan but it's not the prettiest item I have seen so I would rather use a cake board or pretty cakes stand.
It is really easy to clean the turntable (I have never put it in the dishwasher and wouldn't risk it to be honest) you just need to wipe it with a damp clothes with some washing up liquid on and then rinse it.
At £13.49 in Hobbycraft as well as being available online if you are into cake decorating I would say this was a must have item and well worth the money.
If you decorate a lot of cakes, you need this product!
A stable turntable that won't slip while you're doing some fiddly royal icing piping. Plus it doesn't have that nasty black felt on the surface that some decorating turntables have, which leave black residue on sugar paste.
-Ease of Use-
Simply stick your cake on the turntable (preferably already attached to a cake board to make it easier to take your cake off afterwards) and turn as needed. The turntable won't stick, so you should find it easy to revolve the cake. You may find that you prefer to cover the cake (sugar paste/marzipan) etc off the turntable, as the excess cake covering can fall over the edge of the turntable, and drag down the paste already on the cake, causing cracks.
This might seem a bit pricey for a fairly basic function, but if you decorate a lot of cakes, you'll appreciate a quality product that makes the task a bit easier
The PME turntable is a must have for those of you who make and decorate cakes. One of my daughters and I have got in to baking lately and decided after looking at different turntables and the prices we would invest in this one, we're both glad we did.
The table costs £17.49 at Hobby craft but you can find it cheaper elsewhere. The table itself is white and comes in two parts, the top, which is the flat stand area with a stem, and the second part is the actual stand along with a stem that is hollow, this allows the top to sit in place on it.
The flat stand measures 9 inches in diameter, an 8 inch cake easily fits on this stand and allows decorating to the bottom of the cake, even with the stand protruding.
The stand is very sturdy and can take the weight of a heavy cake; I would say you could put more than one cake on top, or a heavy cake like a fruit cake.
The stand top does not wobble due to it being in two halves and really is very supportive. I have used this a few times now and it definitely helps when trying to decorate a cake. It rotates easily and isn't sticky or hard to turn, but it also doesn't spin too much.
The table itself once assembled (it comes assembled) is not heavy, it is easy to move and dismantle. You can wash the stand top, without worrying about getting the base wet.
On the stand top there are six black dots, I use these as a guide as where to place the cake, as I bake 8 inch, it sits just inside them. I have no idea though what they are for? If anyone else does, please tell me.
The surface of the stand is bumpy and raised slightly, I think this is also to keep the cake from sliding about or moving, I have found this works and my cakes have never moved even with quite hard pressure to smooth icing on them.
This is not a cheap item, I would not buy it from hobby craft but you can get it for about £13 elsewhere (look on the internet) but this is definitely worth it. It makes decorating and icing cakes so much easier. Due to the height of the platform as well it just generally makes looking at it easier, because it is not as low on your kitchen work top. The spinning aspect is without a doubt the best bit, it just makes life so much easier.
