Pyrex Measuring Jug
Advantages: Easy to use, robust, good value.....
Disadvantages: None whatsoever..
When I moved out of my mothers house into my own flat some eight years ago, my mum had insisted on me buying several 'essential' items during the three months running up to my moving in date. One of these insisted-upon items was a microwavable glass measuring jug for my kitchen, an item that my mother uses in her own kitchen on an almost-daily basis.
The jug I bought at the time was by the well-known manufacturer, 'Pyrex'. I have long since dropped (and smashed) the original jug, but at a visit to a car boot sale around a year ago, I snapped up a replacement, which was an absolute bargain at only 60 pence. I was extremely pleased about spotting this near-immaculate item for sale given that the current retail price for a brand new Pyrex jug is anything from £5 - £10.
The jug is extremely hard-wearing (as long as you don't drop it!!) as it is made from glass. I have purchased many plastic measuring jugs over the years but find that they often end up looking grubby and worn, which results in them needing replaced after a fairly short time. The Pyrex jug by comparison, will last for years, as the glass is so strong and hard-wearing. If you require proof of this, you may be interested to know that my mother is extremely proud of the fact that she is still using the same Pyrex jug that she bought sometime before 1980! With the exception of some of the lettering/measurements on her jug being a bit worn and having rubbed off, the jug is in great condition and has no real damage to it.
The jug can be used for a variety of purposes around the home and kitchen. I use my jug for measuring out liquids such as milk or water when cooking or baking, but also use it as a receptacle for heating up liquid in the microwave. The glass of the Pyrex jug is so thick and durable that the jug can be used directly in the microwave, which I find saves me not only time but washing up! For heating up a tin of soup for example, I simply pour the soup into the jug and microwave for the required time. Once the soup has been heated sufficiently, I find it very easy to pour this into two bowls for my husband and myself, which is very quick and easy to do given the generously-sized spout on the jug. There is very little fuss involved in this process too, given that the need for spoons or ladles is removed altogether.
Furthermore, when it comes to making homemade sauces, such as a white sauce, in the microwave, I find that this is quick and easy to do with the use of the Pyrex jug. I can simply measure out the ingredients (flour and butter) using my kitchen scales, and measure out my milk easily using the jug. All I then need to do is add the rest of the ingredients into the jug of milk and pop it into the microwave. The fact that the jug can be used as a receptacle for cooking in is the biggest advantage point to this product, for me personally at least.
The measuring jug is of course very accurate and is also easy to use. There are measurements down both sides of the jug, so whichever way you look at the jug (either with the handle to the left or the right) the measurements are facing you. This makes using the jug slightly quicker and more convenient than other jugs I have had in the past which only have measurements down one side of the jug, requiring you to swivel it round before you can use it. I also think that the measurements being down either side of the jug makes it an ideal item for both left-handed and right-handed users.
The jug has a variety of measurements on it such as fluid ounces, quarter and half pints, and millilitres and litres, all of which are easy to use and accurate. The capacity of my jug is 0.5 litres, but I believe there is a larger measuring jug available from Pyrex which will of course have a larger capacity.
The jug is easy to clean as it is made of glass. As I have already mentioned, the Pyrex jug is extremely durable and hard-wearing. It can withstand being microwaved as well as being washed using a dishwasher. As I do not own a dishwasher, I need to wash mine by hand, but this is a fairly painless process, and I find that a little sponge scourer and a spot of washing up liquid are usually enough to clean the jug sufficiently. I have noticed that the Pyrex glass is such a good quality that there is no problem with staining or discolouration of the clear glass, which is a problem I have had with plastic measuring jugs I have owned in the past, in addition to plastic storage containers. This means of course that the jug has remained looking almost as good as new, even though it is used at least twice a week in my house hold.
The jug that I have (0.5litre capacity) is available from Argos for £4.99 which I really think is brilliant value. There is a website for the store at www.argos.co.uk. Alternatively, you can buy a whole variety of items from the Pyrex range from www.amazon.co.uk, where prices start at around the £3 mark.
Overall, I would highly recommend the purchase of a Pyrex jug as I think it is a great value for money item that is both durable and convenient. I think every household should have one, and would go so far as to say I think it would be a very useful item to give as an engagement, house warming or even a wedding present! Full marks from me as I wouldn't be without mine now!
Summary: A handy, hard-wearing household helper!!!
