Pyrex Measuring Jug
Advantages: Geat size and quality
Disadvantages: The pouring lip is absolutely rubbish
Ever since I moved out of home years ago now I had made do with a scabby old plastic measuring jug which had done the job admirably. When it finally cracked beyond repair I decided to invest in a more decent one as my tastes have become a little bit more sophisticated over the years and I now use a measuring jug for more than just heating up beans in the microwave. I definitely didn't want to buy another cheap plastic one and as I already own a few Pyrex dishes I decided to get a jug to match it.
Surprisingly it only cost me £5.99 which I found to be a great price and to be honest for some reason when looking for one I expected to pay at least double this for one of such good quality.
Well not surprisingly the best thing about this Pyrex measuring jug is its quality which is top notch like all Pyrex products that I have previously bought. It is made from Borosilicate glass which has loads of scientific properties but what it all basically boils down to is that it is highly resistant to changes in temperatures meaning that it can withstand more extremes in temperatures than normal glass.
This means that you can use this Pyrex measuring jug in the oven up to 300 degrees Celsius and it can also go in the fridge and freezer without having to worry that it is going to crack or shatter. Although I use it for other things now I do still on occasion put it in the microwave and I find that it can stay in there for long periods of time with no problems whatsoever.
The jug is also a nice solid feeling and I never feel like it is delicate and have to worry about it breaking if I drop it. I have dropped this several times as I can be extremely clumsy and there isn't the slightest chip or crack in it even though I have dropped it straight on the floor from quite a high height. I'm sure that it has some level where it will break but I have yet to find it and even dropping it in the metal sink with other Pyrex dishes has resulted in nothing more than a slight clanging noise.
The size of the jug is also fantastic and it has a capacity of over 1 litres which is quite a lot compared to the 500ml my old jug used to have and I find that no matter what I am using it for the depth is 99 times out of 100 large enough to accommodate all the liquid I need to measure or food I need to heat up.
Although I am thoroughly modern and use metric in nearly everything there is the odd occasion that something will still be in the old imperial measurements so I like the fact that the jug has both metric and imperial measurements up to one litre or one and a half pints.
The handle is also fantastic and something that I can't find fault with. It is really thick and chunky and lovely and comfortable to hold. It is also set a nice distance from the actual jug which means that even my sausage fingers have no problem wrapping themselves round it and getting a tight grip of it. It also stays cool after being in the microwave or the over and even when the actual jug has become hot the handle is still cool and comfortable to the touch.
Although it isn't non-stick I do find this easier to clean than other glass products and it is as though the glass actually repels stuff from sticking to it. It is also dishwasher safe. The measuring points on the outside of the jug have all stayed on and haven't faded away or rubbed off and they are still clear to see which I appreciate as with my old one I really had trouble trying to actually see the point I was filling it up to as it had faded away so badly.
There aren't really a lot of negatives that I can think of with this Pyrex jug. It is lovely quality and at the end of the day it measures liquid which is its intended use.
However saying that there is quite a major flaw with this particular jug and that is its spout. The spout on the jug is absolutely useless and has no accuracy whatsoever. The lip is literally a centimetre wide and hangs over the edge of the jug only a few millimetres. This means that no matter how careful that I am with pouring out the carefully measured liquid I can't manage it without it going everywhere. This is a pretty major flaw in what is supposed to be a measuring jug after all. I find it incredibly irritating to carefully measure up some liquid and then lose half of it again when pouring it out. This to me makes this jug next to useless as a measuring jug which at the end of the day is its intended purpose.
Unfortunately as a measuring jug because of the poor shape and positioning of the lip this is ineffective which is a shame because the rest of it is such good quality. Thanks though to its large size it can still be used for a variety of things such as heating up food in the microwave and even just as a mixing bowl as it is big enough. If you do a lot of baking or cooking and are looking for a jug that you can use with accuracy then look elsewhere as this really isn't the one for you. However if you are just looking for a general jug type bowl with a handle that you can use for carrying food and is microwave safe then this one will suit you perfectly.
I still think the jug is fantastic value for the excellent size and quality and if you are aware of the rubbish lip in advance then you won't be disappointed with the rest of it.
