Advantages: sturdy, long lasting, easy to read measurements
Disadvantages: None for me
Lets face it, most of us own a Pyrex item of some description as it is a leading brand in kitchenware. The only item I own that is actual Pyrex is a 0.5L Measuring jug.
When we purchased our house just over 5 years ago, it was the first time I had moved out of home so needless to say I was a little excited and went out and purchased most of our kitchen stuff before we had even had the keys! For no particular reason I picked up a Pyrex measuring jug, even though the emphasis at the time was on saving money and a Pyrex measuring jug was more expensive than some other cheaper jugs around.
Looking back now though, I am glad I purchased the one I did. As said, it was over 5 years ago we brought this house and my trusty Pyrex jug is still going strong. Not only is it still going strong, it still looks absolutely immaculate. There is no sign whatsoever of any chips, marks or scratches on the glass of the jug and the red measurements are still completely intact with no writing coming off or fading at all.
This is a very substantial jug made entirely of glass. It isn't cheap and flimsy glass, it is quite heavy and thick which I suppose is the reason it has lasted such a long time. Mine is the 0.5L version but you can get larger or smaller ones to suit your individual needs. The 0.5L one has a large thick glass handle which is easy to grip and isn't at all slippy or fragile and has a decent sized spout around the top rim.
The great thing about this jug is that it features both imperial and metric measurements so you can measure in pints, fl.oz or litres - whatever takes your fancy. The measurements are on both sides of the jug so you don't risk spilling anything out of the jug trying to turn it round to see the measurements and the lines are crisp and clear so you won't have any trouble making out your measurements.
As said, this jug is a little on the expensive side for what it is and the general price seems to be around £4.00 which is quite a lot for a standard sized measuring jug, but considering mine has lasted more than 5 years and doesn't show any signs of wear and tear whatsoever, I think it is safe to say this jug is extremely good value for money. Yes, you can get cheaper jugs, but would it be as good and would it last as long? I think not!
This jug is oven safe as well as being microwave safe, dishwasher safe and the great thing about this being glass is that it cleans really well so you don't get any transfer of flavours from previous uses, no matter how strong those flavours are. It is a really versatile jug in that it can be used for mixing, measuring, pouring and storing liquids as you only need to cover the top completely and you can store stuff in your jug in the fridge.
The manufacturers must have as much confidence in the product as I do too as they give a 10 year guarantee with the product - well I am half way there and still going strong! The jug is made from Borosilicate glass which is something I had never heard of before, but basically I think it is just extremely tough hard wearing glass which can withstand great temperatures.
Overall, this is one product that I have owned since we moved in the house and I haven't found a single thing to complain about which is quite unusual for me. It is so sturdy and strong and the measurements are extremely easy to read and decipher. I do have a tendency to be a little accident prone in the kitchen so the fact that this jug is not only still intact, but in A1 condition, is a testament to it and should my trusty jug die a death one day, then I will not have any hesitation in replacing it with the exact same make and model. This one holds an ample amount of liquid, yet is small enough to be able to store easily in a cupboard. It may be a little more expensive than some, but it is well worth the money and comes with a high recommendation from me.
Summary: A great measuring jug that will last you for years
