Pyrex Measuring Jug
Advantages: Well designed, very durable, very useable & very long lasting
Disadvantages: Cost more than a cheap version so initial outlay is a bit more
These are so good, that I own two of them!
At this time of year, I'm well into doing my preserves. I make jams, chutneys, jellies, cheeses, brown sauce, bottled fruit, and a whole host of other things that last us through the rest of the year, and are used often as gifts as well. During this process, I need to measure accurately a lot, and this is where having two Pyrex jugs comes in very handy. Some of the stuff I'm measuring can be pretty hot too, so again, Pyrex is a godsend here.
Pyrex is a form of toughened glass designed to cope well with heat. These jugs made from Pyrex are extremely tough and durable, and also very accurate for measuring too.
Cost & Availability:
To be honest, you can find Pyrex jugs in a wide range of places from kitchenware departments of big stores, to supermarkets and even on markets and in hardware stores. Do watch out for fakes though, as some glass jugs just aren't as tough as they make out to be, whereas Pyrex ones are. The cost - well that varies a lot, I've seen these as low as a £3 on the market, and as high as £10 in expensive cookware stores and even some online places. I believe at least one of mine came from John Lewis, but I've had them both for quite some years now, so I can't remember exactly what we paid.
Any jug is going to be useful as a jug. A jug with measurements up the outside will be useful as a measuring jug, but not all jugs are as durable as this one. This can go in microwave, dishwasher, freezer, and even the oven. It is super tough and has both millilitres and fluid ounces marked on it (that's for litres and pints). It's also incredibly stable as jugs go, I suppose it's to do with the shape and thickness of the glass - it just isn't easily knocked over which I think is pretty helpful too.
Another element I like about these jugs is that they actually pour cleanly. You know how some jugs, well just don't, they ooze, and drip as you tip them up or back down and don't give a nice clean steady flow. Well these aren't like that, they pour cleanly and tidily and give a nice steady clean flow which again makes them a firm favourite in my kitchen.
A Few of My Thoughts:
I have a few things in my kitchen which many people would look at and assume they're just for pretty - like a pestle and mortar for example - but I use them. If it's not useful, it doesn't get to stay in my kitchen because despite it being a good size, there just isn't enough space for everything I'd like to have there. So for me, jugs like this which work so well, and are so versatile are much better than ones which are less versatile. Being able to pour cold liquid in this, boil it in the microwave, and then dump the used jug straight in sink or dishwasher is brill, and saves me time and hassle.
Having two of these, I like their design a lot too - because the handle is only attached at the top, it means these stack together well, so I can have them stacked one inside the other and then stood inside a bowl (which is in turn inside another bowl which stands in a casserole dish that's inside a pie dish), in my cupboard. (I did mention space is at a premium lol).
I would say, if you've a youngster who's setting up their kitchen for the first time, buying them one of these to help them build their kitchen utensils up would be a good buy. They're designed to last, so they'll be a longstanding addition to their kitchen rather than something they'll need to replace two or three years down the line. My oldest one, I've had for about 14 years, and the second one is probably close to 10 years old now.
Summary: A well designed and really useable long lasting Jug that's worth buying.
