Pyrex are a brand synonymous with durability and quality. The Pyrex brand first came into being in 1915 originating in the US as a manufacturer of heat resistant glass but the technology used was actually invented in Germany in 1893. The origins of it's name are not in fact a Latin hybrid as is often thought but rather something purely arbitrary. The brand make numerous products both for kitchen use and laboratory use due to the high heat durability of their products. Perhaps one of the most widely used is this multi purpose measuring jug and container.

This particular jug is quite rounded in shape with a flat bottom and glass handle also moulded from the pyrex glass. Along the side in a fairly uninspiring but very bright red written large is the Pyrex logo. Much smaller you will find the measurements on the jug with small indents to signify keys measurement marks and numbers to indicate key measurements. Both tend to be quite small and therefore difficult to read. I also found that they could maybe have included more increments on it although perhaps it would have got too overcrowded?

The overall design is functional over beauty and aside from the size of lettering it works well on the whole. This particular model holds a capacity of 0.5l so is perfect for measuring things like stock and is ideal for cooking. Being made from Pyrex it is designed to withstand hot liquids and does so very well indeed. We've had ours for some time now and not had a problem with cracking or any breakage. We use it beyond simply measuring and for the general transporting of hot liquids. The handle does not heat up as quickly as the rest of the jug (I'm assuming because it uses a larger and more solid quantity of glass) so it can easily be moved about. It is also suitable for microwaving and can withstand mostly anything. The only real flaw comes with the spout which is very small and narrow making it awkward to use. Something a little larger would have been better in my opinion and easier to use. That said, perhaps it being a measuring jug they have done this on purpose to allow for slow, careful pouring? Either way, I would have preferred something larger.

Cleaning is very easy. It can go in the dishwasher or can be cleaned by hand. It will withstand the change from hot to cold water without cracking or breaking. Durability of these products is excellent. Over the years it has not broken or become damaged and nor has the lettering or measuring increments faded or blurred despite continual use and scrubbing. The glass has become a little scratched and misty in places over time but otherwise, the condition has endured.

Pyrex is a classic brand still producing excellent, durable products and can come highly recommended for simple, functional everyday use. We bought this for around £7.00 and it has lasted us a few years with many more to come based on current form.

Summary: A durable and functional jug
