Pyrex Measuring Jug
Advantages: Is useful for so many things, much better than plastic jugs
Disadvantages: None - it's perfect
This is the most used accessory in my kitchen by a country mile. The Pyrex measuring jug is available from many shops, mine came from Tesco a few years ago for around £4 and that's the small price of it today too. I think I got my money's worth from the jug within the first hour of using it if I'm honest - it's just so handy for nearly everything I do in the kitchen and it's one of those things that I love to have at hand because I can guarantee it's never long before I need it. Once it's been used, it has to be washed straight away as I know soon I'll be needing it again for something else.
The jug can be used for so many things - I use it to pour water into my baby steriliser and bottle warmer, storing mixes in the fridge, measuring out milk or other liquids for recipes, filling up the steam iron with water - I've lost count of the number of times that I've gone to the drawer to get this out. It's uses seem to be endless! The jug measures 11.5cm x 16cm so is quite compact for storing and it weighs 0.6kg so although it's made of thick glass, it's not too heavy. The sturdy handle makes it very simple to use.
There is a very handy measuring scale on the side of the jug, showing the measurements in both the imperial fluid ounces/pints scale and the metric millilitres/litres scale. This is very useful because recipes seem to differ a lot, some I have only show metric measurements and some older recipes I have only show imperial measurements. The jug I own is the 0.5 litre jug but it is also available in a 1 litre version, something I do keep meaning to buy as it's only around a pound more expensive in Tesco and there's been so many times that I've needed two of them at similar times and I've had to quickly wash mine to reuse. Most of the time, I don't actually use the measuring scale on the side of the jug - it's really just the fact that it's so handy to pour unmeasured amounts of liquids from. But, when I do need to measure liquid (for a recipe for example) my trusty jug always does the job fast. It really helps that the scale is in bright red as it stands out whatever liquid is in the jug and is easy to read from.
The jug is made of glass, apparently called 'borosilicate' glass. I don't know the particulars about this type but all I can say from using this jug for years is that the jug feels incredibly sturdy and I have no worries about using it for any liquids I use in the kitchen. It handles hot liquids such as boiling water very well. The pouring part of the jug towards the top is such a good design that it pours very smoothly and channels the water nicely into pans, cups etc with no spillages - unless there's a bit of user error involved, but that's my fault!
The jug is also dishwasher safe and mine's been in there lots because it's so well used. It comes out in as good condition as it goes in (except it's a lot cleaner!). I've owned ours for years now and to me it looks exactly as it did when I bought it with no signs of wear and tear. The scale on the side is still just as bright and clear as it was brand new. There's been a couple of times that I've accidently caught the jug on the worktop but it's never chipped at all. I have previously used plastic jugs in the kitchen that have cost around £2 at the least, but they have always only lasted a few months and then ended up going in the bin as they've ended up looking tatty. I am certain we'll get plenty more years use from this pyrex jug though, having already owned it around 6 years, for £4 I can honestly say I think it's the perfect accessory for the kitchen and extremely good value for money.
Thanks for reading :o)
