Advantages: Folds away neatly
Disadvantages: It just didn't feel safe
I do a fair bit of DIY and have had the same ladders for years. The other half wanted me to paint the stairwell which meant I was actually going to need something substantially safer to stand on than my old ladders. I borrowed some Abru 3 way combination ladders from a mate and I was impressed with them initially but soon lost faith as I used them for a while. They cost around £50 to £60 to buy and this might seem expensive but they are multi functional and I thought quite sturdy when I used them and I was actually well impressed with the quality.
What I initially liked about these ladders is that they are a combination of three things, i.e. a stepladder, an extension ladder and also a stairwell ladder. Out of all three functions I am the least impressed with the stairwell function but I will explain later.
It was quite a lightweight ladder I first noticed when he brought it over for me in the van and he showed me how to erect it for its various uses. I am always a little way of using a ladder on the stairs (even one that is designed for such a purpose) but I still didn't feel too safe on this. I was impressed however, with the fact that it folds up neatly and therefore stores away well., and although as I say it is lightweight, it is sturdy and feels robust and well made. It is suitable for domestic use only though, so perfect for my bit of DIY.
I was worried about using it as I am a large and heavy bloke and my mate explained it was only really suitable for a maximum weight of fifteen stone. I am way over this but foolishly used it anyway. As a result, when ut was placed on the stairwell I felt myself rocking and just didn't feel at ease painting, looking up, looking down and trying to keep my balance,. I didn't fall but I felt like I might. For this reason I asked my other half to hold onto the ladder for me just for extra security.
I liked the fact that the base was very well splayed out. This made me feel like the ladders were very stable and I felt secure when standing on the rungs. Added to this is the fact that it as got non slip treads which adds to the security and the comfort of using the ladder I feel. Unfortunately, asking her to do this was not a great idea as the ladder connects in such a way that the top part connects to the bottom part with two metal hooks. The hooks themselves initially felt quite secure but as I shifted my weight, so did the hooks shift and trapped my poor wife's index finger on her left hand underneath. As she shouted, I lost control and almost fell off the ladder and hurt myself too.
I also suggest you use stable sensible shoes / footwear whilst up this ladder as the rungs as although the rungs are non slip, they are very narrow and it is very easy to lose your footing and have an accident
Overall I have used my stable ladders and ones where I have felt less at risk of doing myself a serious injury. We did eventually get the stairwell painted but it was a long process and I lost sleep over it.
Overall these are probably good ladders if you don't have an innate fear of falling down stairwells and if you weigh a lot less than I do.
