Advantages: Folds flat, sturdy and solid in use.
We've got some areas of the house which are in someway inaccessible. These are areas such as the storage cupboards at the top of the built-in wardrobes, the back of the top shelves in the kitchen cupboards, and the backs of the top few shelves of the airing cupboard. In the past, we've always stood/balanced on a chair to reach these areas. But when my daughter recently fell off of a chair (She was ok), we decided that it was time to get a safer method to reach these areas. Hence, I came across this Argos Value Step Ladder for £12.99 which seemed to be ideal for the job.
The first thing that really attracted me to this particular ladder was that it was collapsible, meaning that you can fold it up and store it away when not in use. It measures 89cm high by 46cm wide by 5.5cm deep when collapsed, and in our case, it sits nicely by the fridge when stored away. When opened out, it stands 82cm tall, where the top step sits at a height of 46cm above the ground, giving you the extra 36cm of grab rail above the step on the ladder to steady yourself on if needed.
The ladder itself has 2 steps, and the whole lot is made from steel section which means that it is strong. Each step has a non-slip tread formed in to it and is also quite wide, which means that they provide a good deal of stability when you stand on them. Overall, the weight is just over 4kg, which isn't too heavy to carry around the house to where it is needed. For added security, the bottom feet of the ladder each have a rubber foot on them which means that it will give you a sturdy non-slip base on the floor when you stand on it. Also of note is that it has a maximum safe working load of 150kg, which for such a small ladder and for the price, is quite a lot and a useful quality. It means that you can get on the ladder and either lift up or get down a heavy box etc from some top shelf without fear of the ladder collapsing.
In use, it is very simple to set up. Get it out from wherever it is stored, open it up, put it on a steady base and climb up. I did have some reservations about buying an Argos Value range product such as a ladder because, given the cheap cost, I thought it may be very rickety and unstable in use. But actually, it does feel quite solid and well made when you are on it, and I don't find it in any way unstable when I've used it. In fact, Argos do give it a manufacturer's 2 year guarantee, which, for a Value range product, isn't bad and demonstrates the faith that they have in the build of the product.
Of note, we've also used this on outside jobs on occasion, such as cleaning the windows, or the kids have used it to reach the top of the car when they were cleaning it. The only thing to watch is that if the ground is soft, the feet will sink in to it, making it unsafe to use. But as a domestic use ladder in the house, I can't fault it.
In summary, for an Argos Value Range product this ladder is rather good. Cheap to purchase, it folds flat for easy storage, and is very sturdy and solid in use, and comes with that 2 year guarantee. Easily a 5 star recommendation.
