Crumpler The Gimp 13"
by europe-chick
I've had a couple of Crumpler 'The Gimp' laptop sleeves. The only reason that I'm on my second 'Gimp' is that I now have a different sized laptop and my original 'Gimp' was too small for my new laptop.
I really like Crumpler products, they are very expensive, but they are really good quality. Crumpler products come with a 30 ... year guarantee, that's not a typo, that really is a '30' '3-0' 'thirty' year guarantee, hell that's probably even longer than the product that you're buying it to protect will last!
So I have the 13 inch Gimp to protect my 13 inch laptop. This fits my laptop absolutely perfectly, it's a very snug fit and there's no extra room in the sleeve at all for my laptop to move around. I have this in a silver colour, but it does also come in various other colours too, I remember red, black, green and brown. It also comes in various different sizes, from a 10 inch up to a 17 inch. I paid around £20 for this from Amazon.
This Gimp is a well padded sleeve to protect your laptop, it's a laptop sleeve as opposed to a laptop carrier, and as such you would zip your laptop into this and then just pop the sleeve into a bag or a rucksack. It fastens with a sturdy zip which goes completely all around 3 of the sides so that the laptop sleeve opens out completely flat. The sleeve itself is made of a well padded neoprene fabric, which is really durable and robust, and which repels dust and dirt to a certain extent. It has the Crumpler logo on the outside of the sleeve.
Inside the Gimp are two little elastic straps with hold the top two corners of the screen of your laptop secure so that you can even use the sleeve around your laptop to protect your laptop from scratches when in use. I tend to use this around my laptop if I'm using it whilst travelling, as I find that it creates a kind of a heat mat for my laptop to protect my legs if I'm using my laptop on my lap. Because the laptop sleeve is soft and padded it is really comfortable to use like this on my lap.
I have to admit that I don't really take an awful lot of care of my laptop, it has been dropped, and thrown in an already overstuffed bag with an absolute tonne of other stuff, and this sleeve has proved to be absolutely invaluable. It has protected my laptop perfectly, no matter how squashed or buried it may be in my bag, and it's even protected my laptop from quite a few drops. I don't need to worry that my laptop will be damaged when it's zipped within this.
I would definitely recommend Crumpler's The Gimp, I wouldn't hesitate to get another if I needed a different size or if it was lost or stolen. I've even converted my husband to using a Gimp for his laptop too. Read the complete review |

Crumpler The Gimp 15
by dinopoohy8
I bought this product two years back for my Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I knew that it was most suitable for a 15-inch laptop (like a Mac) but I was quite desperate for a decent laptop case for my laptop (14-inch) and I quite liked the decent of The Gimp by Crumpler.
APPEARANCE
The product comes in several colours including ... black, silver, brown, and red but I chose the black one because I thought it would be the most versatile (not just for college but also for work), and it wouldn't get visibly dirty. The black one makes use of silver thread to form the curvy border which is quite stylish.
The zip for the The Gimp is quite big which is something that I really like about this as I don't have to fumble to open up the cover. My laptop, unfortunately, is quite heavy and this little convenience really makes things a lot easier for me. The zip runs through all three sides of the cover, allowing you to open up the sleeve fully flat. Another feature that is good about the zip especially is that there's a small layer of protection between the zip at the laptop so that your laptop is protected from the actual zip, avoiding scratches.
The inside of the Black cover is actually a bright, neon-like green which I feel is quite refreshing and trendy. There are two 'hooks' at two corners of the laptop, allowing you to secure your laptop to the case so it doesn't run about.
The cover itself is really well-padded compared to other cases. I've used the case for about 2 years and the padding remains as thick as it was when I first bought it. I've dropped my laptop (in the case) down the stairs even with no visible defects (it could have been that my laptop is just more durable, as it is known to be) but I do think that the cover really helps. The cover also feels rather waterproof as the material doesn't really absorb water very well.
DRAWBACKS?
The only complaint that I have about this product is that the workmanship doesn't seem as good as the materials and the intended construction is. I like the hooks, the zips, the design, and the material used for the padding, but the silver thread that forms the design seems to be running a little loose as I continue to use it.
Because of the quality padding as well, it actually makes your laptop seem bigger than it should be and it might be a little difficult to fit your laptop (with case) into standard 'pouches' that you see in rucksacks or bagpacks. But of course, it's also arguable that you are perhaps meant to put your laptop in that compartment without a protective case.. I'm not too sure, but the bulk sometimes is a hindrance for me.
PRICE
I actually bought this product at full price which was about 20+ pounds, but it appears that Amazon has got an offer now at 9.99 pounds which I think is a steal for the quality of the product that you're getting. The cover indeed offers your laptop the protection that you need, and it is durable (the running threads is just a matter of decoration for me, so not much of a brownie point is lost there). Crumpler Silver Dig M
by danny691
Being one of these people that has to carry my laptop around a lot from location to location, i need something that will offer me protection from the elements and the durability because I like my laptop accessories to last. At £33 this Crumpler Silver Dig medium notebook carrying case is ideal, and if it didn't last I would be most ... annoyed having spent such a decent chunk of money.
The laptop carrying case has a main pocket fastened with a velcro pad. I would prefer a zip for piece of mind personally, but the way the front flap comes all the way over offers protection from temptation. There is also a mesh pocket within the laptop pocket to hold chargers and mice etc. I am pleased with the look of the laptop carrying case, but a little dissappointed that it doesn't have a zip on the laptop enclosure.
I do use this sometimes, but my laptop carrying bag (another review) offers me more protection from thieves and with this case I wouldn't trust it on public transport, for example a busy tube in London would be a no no for me. The fact the case comes in a number of colours as opposed to just black is a plus, although I think the brighter the colour, the more unwanted attention you will get. Overall this is inadequate for everyday use as I would rather keep my laptop on me than look cool. I would suggest you either go for a carrying case that is more discreet and has a zip, or a rucksack designed specially for carrying a laptop. Read the complete review |
