My husband has seconded the house laptop and often takes it out of the house to work or to our friend's house to bore them with the latest home video or photo album we have. We bought this lap top case to protect it whilst it is on its travels. We also put the case on now though, even when we store it as we have noticed that it is becoming quite scratched on the outside. We didn't want a really chunky case so when we found this on Amazon we decided to buy it.
The 15" Gimp costs £39.00 - £40.00. On receiving the item I consider it money well spent. It is a very fashionable piece, made from top notch materials and the outlay for the case far outweighs the cost of replacing a broken lap top.
The case is made from a stretchy neoprene material which is like a wet suit, this material is moulded on to a piece of thick foam. It is stretchy and thick yet stays quite rigid. The material is thick so that it protects the lap top from bumps and scraps but it would not protect it if you dropped it from a great height. It is a wonderful case but it is not a magic case. The internal dimensions of the case are 35.5 cm x 25.5 cm x 3 cm. It would not matter too much if the case is slightly too baggy, but they are designed to make a really nice tight snug fit. The lap top fits in perfectly, there is no fighting to push it in and it zips up without fuss.
To insert the lap top the best way to open the zip fully out and zip it around it. You can open the zip half way and slot it in but I'm scared of dropping it so I prefer doing it this way. My husband and I often use the lap top with the case still on anyway. He works on the dining room table and usually he has to make sure he puts a place mat down to work on but since having the case he can just use this instead. The case has little elastic hooks to hook around the edges so the laptop can wear the case whilst it is open and in use. The zipper is chunky so you can pull it round easily. It is made from metal but this metal is kept well away from the lap top because there is a fabric flap that acts as barrier between the edge of the lap top and the zip. It is little points like this that add up to make a fantastic product.
==Style, design and practicality==
This laptop case looks extremely fashionable and you can get it in a variety of colours to add some personality to it. I really like the feel of the fabric and love the way that it folds around the lap top for you to keep it on while you work. I like how slim it is too. We keep our lap top in a cupboard when not in use so having it in this case means that it takes up less valuable room. The laptop case is water resistant so you can run about with it in the rain but do not go taking it in the bath as you will most certainly end up with a soggy machine.
The design is faultless, it fits snugly and the whole thing is so well made and good quality. The case comes with a 30 year guarantee which just goes show how confident the manufacturer is in their product; this is sure to outlast my lap top! The only downside to the case and this certainly does not detract any points from them, is that there is nowhere to keep the charger. We either take it out of the house charge or use old laptop bag that has pockets and spaces for various gadgets and gismos. This product is designed purely to case the laptop, add some fun and style while protecting it at the same time.
Finally I would like to say that I completely recommend the Gimp case. My husband loves it because he can work on the wooden dining table without me fearing he will scratch it as the soft material of the case will do no damage to the wood. I prefer the case because it saves room in the house and prevents it being scratched. If we wanted to sell the laptop second hand then it will be important to make sure that it looks good. No one wants to buy a scratched laptop as it shows that the owners didn't look after it. I will be awarding the Gimp 4 stars and the reason being is that I think that they could make them a little bit cheaper. Yes they are well made and very attractive but can they really cost this much to make?
I'm having to use one of my husbands laptops at the moment as my laptop has some serious issues and he's trying to fix it for me. Both of my husbands laptops are 15 inch screens, and he normally carries one or both of them around in a rucksack. My laptop is much smaller and I normally carry my laptop enclosed in a laptop sleeve and then stuffed into my handbag, a tote bag or my carry on bag if I'm travelling. I needed to get a cheap laptop sleeve to protect my husbands laptop whilst I'm borrowing it and carting it around, especially as I think that I may have caused the issues with my own laptop by dropping it - ooops!
I'm a big fan of Crumpler products, they are very expensive, but they are really good quality. Crumpler products come with a 30 year guarantee, that's not a typo, that really is a '30' '3-0' 'thirty' year guarantee, hell that's probably even longer than the product that you're buying it to protect will last!
I specifically wanted to get Crumpler's 'The Gimp' laptop sleeve and I nipped into the Crumpler shop to see how much they were. They've updated the design of The Gimp since Dooyoo's photo was added, basically the new design sleeve is plain, it doesn't have the wavy stitching around the case, and it comes in a different range of colours. It was also £30, more than I really wanted to pay.
I decided to take a look on Amazon to see if I could get one a little bit cheaper, and as luck would have it I managed to get an old design Gimp for less than £10 - bargain! So I bought the 15 inch Gimp to protect my husbands 15 inch laptop. This fits his laptop absolutely perfectly, it's a very snug fit and there's no extra room in the sleeve at all for his laptop to move around. I bought this in black, but it was also available in silver, red or brown. It also came in various different sizes, to fit from a 10 inch laptop right up to a 17 inch laptop.
The Gimp is a well padded sleeve to protect his laptop, it's a laptop sleeve as opposed to a laptop carrier, and as such I just zip his laptop into this and then just pop the sleeve into my bag. It fastens with a sturdy zip which goes completely all around 3 of the sides so that the laptop sleeve opens out completely flat. The sleeve itself is made of a well padded neoprene fabric (wetsuit fabric), which is really durable and robust, and which repels dust, dirt and water to a certain extent. It has the Crumpler logo on the outside of the sleeve, and my black sleeve has the wavy stitching in silver.
Inside the Gimp are two little elastic straps or loops which hold the top two corners of the screen of his laptop secure so that I can use the sleeve around his laptop and protect it from scratches when in use. I tend to use the sleeve around his laptop if I'm using it whilst travelling, as I find that it also creates a kind of a heat mat for the laptop to protect my legs if I'm using it on my lap. Because the laptop sleeve is very soft and padded it is really comfortable to use like this on my lap. Just one more thing to note about the interior of the Gimp, my black Gimp has a quirky lime green interior.
I have to admit that I don't normally take an awful lot of care of laptops, however I am being extra careful with my husbands! This sleeve is certainly more than adequate to protect his laptop from day to day knocks and scratches, and to protect it when thrown into an already overstuffed bag with an absolute tonne of other stuff - as it always is! I've been using this virtually every day for just over a month now, and so far ''touch wood'' his laptop is absolutely fine!
I would definitely recommend Crumpler's The Gimp, and I'd definitely recommend looking on Amazon to find an old design Gimp for a third of the price, especially as it's essentially the same laptop sleeve.
I bought this product two years back for my Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I knew that it was most suitable for a 15-inch laptop (like a Mac) but I was quite desperate for a decent laptop case for my laptop (14-inch) and I quite liked the decent of The Gimp by Crumpler.
The product comes in several colours including black, silver, brown, and red but I chose the black one because I thought it would be the most versatile (not just for college but also for work), and it wouldn't get visibly dirty. The black one makes use of silver thread to form the curvy border which is quite stylish.
The zip for the The Gimp is quite big which is something that I really like about this as I don't have to fumble to open up the cover. My laptop, unfortunately, is quite heavy and this little convenience really makes things a lot easier for me. The zip runs through all three sides of the cover, allowing you to open up the sleeve fully flat. Another feature that is good about the zip especially is that there's a small layer of protection between the zip at the laptop so that your laptop is protected from the actual zip, avoiding scratches.
The inside of the Black cover is actually a bright, neon-like green which I feel is quite refreshing and trendy. There are two 'hooks' at two corners of the laptop, allowing you to secure your laptop to the case so it doesn't run about.
The cover itself is really well-padded compared to other cases. I've used the case for about 2 years and the padding remains as thick as it was when I first bought it. I've dropped my laptop (in the case) down the stairs even with no visible defects (it could have been that my laptop is just more durable, as it is known to be) but I do think that the cover really helps. The cover also feels rather waterproof as the material doesn't really absorb water very well.
The only complaint that I have about this product is that the workmanship doesn't seem as good as the materials and the intended construction is. I like the hooks, the zips, the design, and the material used for the padding, but the silver thread that forms the design seems to be running a little loose as I continue to use it.
Because of the quality padding as well, it actually makes your laptop seem bigger than it should be and it might be a little difficult to fit your laptop (with case) into standard 'pouches' that you see in rucksacks or bagpacks. But of course, it's also arguable that you are perhaps meant to put your laptop in that compartment without a protective case.. I'm not too sure, but the bulk sometimes is a hindrance for me.
I actually bought this product at full price which was about 20+ pounds, but it appears that Amazon has got an offer now at 9.99 pounds which I think is a steal for the quality of the product that you're getting. The cover indeed offers your laptop the protection that you need, and it is durable (the running threads is just a matter of decoration for me, so not much of a brownie point is lost there).
I have a lap top bag that I use for work that is oh so serious, with pockets for pens and the AC adapter. It is very corporate looking and there is not a hint of personality about it. However, my lap top is pretty cool and I thought that is deserved a nicer looking pouch to keep it in. I saw the "Gimp" and I thought it would be perfect to store my lap top in and protect it from scratches and knocks.
I have never heard of the brand name Crumpler before, but happened upon it when searching on Amazon. I saw the product and was quite taken with it. I checked out the company website and really liked their innovative products. I purchased my case directly from the Crumpler website and bough the 15" for £39.00. When my product arrived, I opened it with baited breath as my lap top is 15.4" and really hoped the 15" would fit. The design of the product reminds me of a scuba diving suit, it is supposed to be a snug fit and not a baggy one.
The internal dimensions of the case are 35.5 cm x 25.5 cm x 3 cm. My lap top fitted snugly inside, hurray. It was not fairly tight but there was enough give to make it a comfortable fit. It is really important you check the dimensions of your lap top before ordering, they do have a wide range of sizes, so you really should not have a problem. Customer service wise, they are excellent. My boyfriend bought a larger one for his 17" Mac book pro but when it arrived it was too wide, on emailing the customer service team, they arranged for a replacement and were more than helpful.
*Slipping it in...*
Slipping the lap top in the case is easy as the zipper fastener opens really wide. You can either fully open the zipper and fasten the lap top in, or simply pull it open half way and slot it in. The beauty of doing it this way is that it is quicker. There is no worry of the zipper scratching the lap top as there is a protective flap of material that prevents the lap top coming in contact with the zip. Fastening the lap top in properly means you can keep the sleeve wrapped around the lap top while you work. If you open the case to capacity and lay it open and flat, you can line the lap top up inside it, then using the two little elastic loops you can hook these around your screen to keep the sleeve in place.
It depends on what I'm doing as to how I put the lap top away; whichever I choose though, I know my lap top is safe and protected.
The case is quite thin but padded and compromises of a layer of foam with a layer of neoprene wrapped around it. This material is really stretchy and is similar to the stuff that wet suits are made from. Similarly to wet suits; the lap top case is also waterproof. I would not advocate taking the lap top swimming or in the bath however! I think it mainly means that it is splash proof and rain proof.
The case protects the lap top from scrapes and scratches but will offer minimal protection from a fall; it does not make the lap top indestructible! The exterior of many of our lap tops are quite vulnerable and easy to scratch. They are stylishly designed and so should be cared for, keeping the lap top scratch free will also increase its resale .
The case is contemporary and looks very neat. I like the design as it is simple but looks good quality. The zip is hard wearing and tough and the case has nylon stitching which lasts a lot longer than cotton. In the middle of the case is the company logo, which is a little stick man. It is subtle enough to not look out of place when I take it into the office but still looks pretty cool. There are a number of colours to choose from, from bright red to a geeky looking brown. They are all finished with a sleek matt finish. This offers a chance to personalise the lap top. I bought a grey one; this probably makes me rather boring doesn't it?
The lap top case is thin enough for me to slip it into my old lap top bag. The beauty of this means that I can still have my cool case for use in the office and still have my old bag that accommodates the charger and mouse.
The case is comfortable to hold and easy to zip up. As I use the bag more, the fit started becoming less snug and the case (being quite a pale grey) started looking a bit grubby. I bunged it in the washing machine on a low setting and this seemed to freshen it up and the case was as good as new.
The cases come with a whopping 30 year guarantee, which is sure to live out any lap top! I was amazed by this and it really won me over; the company must have a lot of faith in their products.
These cases are one of the best I have seen, they are remarkably good quality and a great way to store the lap top. The material used it stretchy, yet strong and really does protect the lap top from those scratches and scrapes from the toll of day to day.
I'd fully recommend this product to anyone who has a netbook or lap top. They even do iPad covers now!
I paid £39.00 which is rather expensive but with the 30 year guarantee, I think it is worth it!
After receiving my laptop I was confronted by numerous laptop cases and bags that would be able to protect my new computer. I had heard of the crumpler name and make before as I own on of their cd cases. So I knew that the brand was of good quality and top materials.
So I started searching for the right size of laptop case and decided to purchase the gimp .It cost less than £20 so a real bargain there I think!
Now the case is made from neoprene, which is the same material that wet suits are made from. This means the case is waterproof and grease proof to an extent. Keeping your laptop safe from bumps, scratches and now , water, well light rain and grease.
There is some decorative stitching on the top of the case, with the little crumpler logo on top too.
The zip is chunky and has the crumpler logo on the tag too. It is easy to grip and the zip never gets stuck, it just works, as it should.
The case is simple and effective unzipped and when closed. The inside is a different colour from the outside and has elastic loops inside which you put around the laptop to keep the two together.
As the material is stretchy you can get extra goodies in with your laptop, like your mouse or even charger.
The case fits the laptop perfectly and barely adds any additional size or weight to your laptop when carrying it. It does make it slightly thicker but that's due to the material and padding. Although there is not a lot of padding it is more than adequate to keep your laptop safe and sound.
I have had my case for around 2 years, but unfortunately the stitching is coming undone around the zip, and so does no longer work. I don't know if my case went through a hard time or not, but for the price I cant complain.
So overall if you need a case for your laptop that is stylish and is individual then the Crumpler gimp is for you. A range of colours are available as well as different sizes from 12" to 16". There may be more now, but that's what they used to sell.
Its cheap and does an outstanding job of protecting you computer.
Buy this case.
A gimp never goes limp. And this figure-hugging wrap of rapture gives you a super thick skin to deflect any abuse. Not that anyone would dare when you're looking this fine and tight! So crawl inside and marinate fetish style. It's the get in, get off and get out, tough skin for all your delicates.
