This is one of the most popular laptop backpacks on the market and for good reason. The reason I personally prefer a backpack rather than the classic type of laptop bag which is more like a briefcase is simply due to the fact that to an outsider you cannot tell that I have a laptop inside this. Of course in recent years generally Targus is associated with laptops but overall it is not the same guaranteed that a thief may have with a standard laptop bag.
Firstly I must mention as per the title of this backpack it is only for up to 16inch laptops. Although it does say 15.4-16inch I can clarify that you can fit in smaller laptops if needs be as there is a secure strap to ensure that the laptop remains firmly in place. You can possibly squeeze in a 17inch laptop and I know HP specifically these days are designing most of their laptops in this size but it would be a tight fit and I wouldn't recommend it.
As I use this primarily for work I need space for not just the laptop but many other items like my paperwork, cables, mouse, lunch and so on and that was the key factor that swung this bag in my favour. There is more than first meets the eye with side pockets, front pockets, grater pockets and of course zipped compartments on the inside ensuring that you can separate out your storage to create an easy find. There are times I use this just alone for the backpack and I may not even be carrying a laptop around, but I like to know that if the situation arises and I need to work from home that I can just slot it into my bag and easily transport it.
For me there is nothing more annoying that the straps weighing down on your shoulder and being able to feel it through your top, especially when the straps are rough and you are carrying heavy items in the bag. With this bag you do not have to worry about this as they are well padded and designed to ensure comfort.
I bought this from Argos a couple of years ago but I can see that it is no longer available on the Argos website. It cost me £20 at the time reduced from £40 and has easily repaid its price many times over. Currently on Amazon it comes in at close to £50 however it looks like they have a slightly different brand that clearly is their focus now called the Targus Notebook Backpack which costs a much more reasonable £21.08 and has a 4.5 star rating from 101 reviews on Amazon so I would actually recommend that backpack over the one I am reviewing.
Overall I think this is a high quality well-made backpack. It is great from transporting your laptop as well as general work use and I always enjoy having the peace of mind that this backpack prefers and am happy to give this a four star rating.
I have owned this black Targus laptop backpack for approximately four years, when I bought it from Best Buy in California. At the time, it cost me just $5 (yes FIVE dollars). The store was having some kind of sale, and had included a coupon in its catalogue that week.
I'd previously never heard of the brand, but the catalogue picture looked trendy, my old bag was, well, old, so I dragged my husband to the store where we found the penultimate bag stashed several racks away from its "proper" place.
This backpack is made of a durable nylon material and has many features, some of which I didn't even notice for the first year. The advertising literature targets business users. I do use it to carry my computer with me to work every day (150 metres away), but it's also perfect for my monthly transatlantic flights. The padded adjustable straps are very comfortable.
The backpack weighs a little over 1kg when empty. It has many storage areas. There are two main, zipped compartments, a smaller zipped pocket at the front, a side pocket which is again zipped and which has a small mesh pocket attached to it, and a medium sized mesh pocket for a water bottle on the other side.
The main compartment has a padded separation pocket at the back, designed to protect notebooks with screens up to 15.4". The remainder of this compartment is where you'll find my spare shoes, a change of clothes, travel rug and a selection of books. The middle section is much thinner, has a nylon pocket within it and is suitable for files or accessories. I find this section to be the perfect place for my travel documents, stethoscope and my lunch.
According to the website, the front section provides generous storage for CDs, pens, a key clip, mobile phone pocket and a port hole for headphones. However, this is where I keep my phone, bleep, makeup, coins and spare theatre cap!
This easy to wipe clean computer bag has lasted very well, with near daily use for four years. In the last few months it has started to fray where the shoulder strap meets the body of the backpack. Thankfully, I'm sure that it has much more life left!
Targus 15.4 - 16 Inch / 39.1 - 40.6cm Classic Backpack
Having just started a new job recently I got kitted out with some nice new bits of gear including a lovely backpack to carry my work laptop around in. I did not get a choice in this item as it is a standard piece of kit that my company purchase and they like their staff to have matching accessories.
The bag comes packaged in a clear plastic sleeve that is flat packed and vacuum packed. The backpack has Targus branded labels and stickers hanging off the zips and some tracing paper inside each of the compartments.
Targus is not a brand that I had come across before using my backpack; it is a United States based manufacturer of computing and photography accessories. They also produce small electronic items such as Bluetooth accessories, cables and memory card readers.
The Targus laptop backpack carrier is an all over black colour and made of tough and resilient Nylon material, which is splash proof. The back pack has exterior dimensions of 47 cm, 34.5 cm and 18 cm depth but it doesn't look bulky at all. This is partly due to the adjustable side straps that you can tighten or loosen to match the amount of luggage that you are carrying in the backpack. These straps are well made of woven fabric and have tough plastic clips.
Being a backpack this has two over the shoulder straps that are quite padded and very comfy to wear. I have a fair walk to work every morning and find this backpack very flexible, secure and easy to manage with an even weight distribution. These are again fully adjustable for your comfort. The backpack weighs just 0.95 kg so is very lightweight but hardwearing and secure. The top of the backpack has a large plastic handle for an easy pick up device.
The backpack has three main compartments area, each with alternating sizes, space and zips within. The main and largest compartment obviously houses the laptop, in this there is a removable laptop compartment that is slightly padded and cushioned for added security for your laptop in transit. This sleeve is designed for 15.4 - 16 inch laptops, which is quite a standard size, but you could also fit a smaller machine in there and it wouldn't move around too much. The top of the sleeve has a fold over flap that is sealed by Velcro for when your laptop is inside.
The other compartments are designed as internal dividers for your work papers and lunch and anything else you like to carry to and from work. The middle compartment also has smaller pockets and spaces for stationary. There are also two lesser side pockets for smaller and more accessible items you might carry such as pens and keys.
This backpack is also a good size for using as walk on hand luggage during travel, with plenty of space for essential items as well as your laptop. One disadvantage I find with this bag is that it is a tad boring and bland, but it is not meant to be a fashionable item, it is totally practical in every way. These Targus laptop bags are available on Amazon for around £20 and are well worth that kind of cash for their quality and practicality.
