When I first started my current job I was given a Dell laptop and a very cheap, padded rucksack to keep it in. I absolutely hated it, it hurt my shoulder to carry my laptop and it's accessories and paperwork, and it looked terrible with a suit, in my opinion. So, I decided that I'd treat myself to a new laptop bag.
I've always prefered leather bags as I find that not only are they durable and long lasting, they look much nicer and give a more professional look. So when I found that Targus do range of leather laptop bags, I decided to go for it.
I settled upon the Targus Leather Attache which I actually bought via an Ebay shop, brand new, for £75. This is a great price, as I have seen this ranging from £80 - £120 elsewhere. It might sound a lot for a laptop bag but this is very, very well made, with strong leather and a decorative white stitching to the outer bag, and a soft padded nylon inner for the laptop itself.
The bag is very smart, and has an outer pocket with a concealed magnetic clasp, useful for paperwork or a pad and pen, without having to open the bag itself. The bag has two long handles which means it is suitable for carrying in one hand, as I tend to do, or putting over your shoulder like a traditional handbag. Certainly it is very smart looking and it looks very professional with a suit, making it ideal if you have a customer facing job or work in a professional office environment.
The bag is fully waterproof and due to the hard quality of the leather, extremely durable with strong corners. It has four steel studs, much like a suitcase, on the bottom, meaning you can place it on the floor without worry of scuffing the leather. Ideal if you have a job which involves travel.
The bag is opened by a durable zip with two zippers, these zippers have metal hoops so you can use a padlock, much like with a suitcase again ideal for travelling.
Inside the bag there are three compartments. One main compartment with a padded separator for your laptop, one side for paperwork, and one smaller area for accessories. There is also what's affectionately (or slightly patronisingly!) referred to as a 'makeup purse', a small removable purse with a middle placed zipper, which does look remarkably like a makeup bag. As this laptop bag is clearly aimed at females, maybe this was added with the best intentions in mind! I don't keep makeup in my laptop bag, however (who would?! it would surely melt with a warm laptop and all that padding) but it would be useful for small change if you don't carry a separate handbag. There is also a mobile phone holder, however this is a regular size mobile holder and doesn't accomodate a BlackBerry. Not really a huge problem for me as I carry my BlackBerry in my handbag but again something to consider if it's what you need in a laptop bag. There is also a pen holder.
The bag doesn't have a separate area for the laptop's charger; I have a fairly large charger / power brick for my laptop and have to put the charger on top of the laptop, it fits fine, but there isn't any room for much else than my BlackBerry charger which I squeeze in too.
One point to note is that if you use a dock for your laptop there is no room in the bag for this, I know not many people do carry the dock around but if this is something you need in a laptop bag it is important to note.
All in all the bag is a good size for me, and fits my 15.4 laptop, charger, a wedge of paperwork and my BlackBerry charger in comfortably. It looks smart, is very well made and 12 months on from purchase is as good as new. Despite the weight of the laptop and it's peripherals the handle is well stitched on and very strong. I can see this laptop bag lasting me a long time so for me the £75 initial cost is well worth it.
I highly recommend the Targus range of leather laptop bags and this laptop bag in particular. For men or for women there is plenty of choice in terms of laptop bags in the range and I rate Targus' leather laptop range very highly.
