Advantages: Good Specs at the time
Disadvantages: Poor Build Quality, Poor Hard Drive,
I bought this laptop in 2004, i originally paid about £800 for it, which at the time was quite good for these specs. The laptop performed quite well, i used it mainly for internet surfing, as my development machine for building websites, and for the occasional game. It did all of these very well due to the graphics card and CPU, which were quite good at the time. The problems i had with it were that the Hard drive was a bit slow, which i remedied by replacing it with a 5200 rpm drive.
The battery life was not the best, lasting a few hours on a good day, so i carried an extra battery and a car charger for this. This laptop went through quite a few operating systems as well, and the drivers were available for all of them, from XP to Linux To Vista it kept going strong
Round about 2006, the screen started acting up, by then i wasn't using it much so i would just connect it to a spare monitor if i needed to use it. Next to go was the touch pad, which i didn't use much anyway, i used an external mouse, After this the DVD Drive went, but by now most people were using memory cards so that didn't bother me much. After this one of the memory sticks stopped working, so it wasn't as speedy as it used to be but it was OK for the internet. After this the keyboard went so i plugged it into the TV and used it as a streamer.
Today it gathers dust in the TV cabinet, but even though it has lost most of its bits, it has lasted me quite some years, and it still works in some form. If Acer can improve on the build quality, they may tempt me back as a customer, the problem is that most manufacturers will build something that will last you just over the warranty period, then they expect you to buy the next model from them, so i do not expect them to improve anything in the future.
Summary: Acers are known for their poor build quality, the hardware is fine though
