Advantages: Long battery life, light weight, crisp TFT display and cheap.

Disadvantages: Vista is hard to adapt to.

I brought an Acer Aspire 5315 back in January 2008 for £299.99 (now priced at £279.99) from Play.com, after shopping around for a cheap yet effective laptop. It arrived promptly, the norm for Play purchases, and at first this was a shock to the system. Windows Vista is in many ways totally different to any Windows operating system going before it and will take some getting used to if you are used to using XP or anything before that. File sharing and network configuration are both made more difficult (but in turn become more secure) by Vista however should you be a little 'network-savvy' there are a number of tutorials on the internet which should be able to talk you through the process of getting your laptop connected to your network and your files shared over said network.

In terms of appearance the 5315 looks professional with black and cream working well together, finished with two green Acer logos. At 2.8kg this laptop is much lighter than my previous, and its wireless connectivity range is impressive, again, much better than my previous laptop.

In my opinion, this laptop is perfect for the student market. Its price is perfect for the student budget, its wireless connectivity and battery life will allow students to do their work comfortably without the need to be within distance of any university/college network or mains power supply. It is fast and has a spacious hard drive giving the opportunity to multi task - perfect for browsing the internet, instant messaging, webcam-ing and working at the same time.

In summary, the Acer Aspire 5315 outperforms its price bracket and excels in fulfilling its market role of being a cheap yet effective laptop. I would recommend this to anybody who is looking for a good performing laptop on a budget. Combine a Play.com purchase with your nectar account (occasionally there are double or triple points offers available on Play purchases) and you can save money on your shopping too!

Summary: Bargain sub £300 laptop.
