Advantages: Effecient, fast, useful
Disadvantages: Ports break easily
I have had this laptop for 2 years now and cannot say its perfect, but it definitely does the job and has served me well. I'll start with the pro's - it is reliable. The battery life hasn't diminished significantly in the 2 years I have had it - about 2 hours when left to its own devices. It is quick to load up and has a combined storage of 100gb across its two hard drives. The key to keeping it running smoothly for me, is to transfer data to an external harddrive. Obviously technology is advancing and this system cannot cope with the demands of modern games. To list the system information;
Intel core 2 duo processor T5500 (1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)
15.4" WXGA Acer CrystalBrite LCD (16ms)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
120GB HDD
DVD-Super Multi double layer
2GB DDR2
802.11a/b/g wireless LAN
The system is currently running Windows Vista which I think is an excellent product to complement my primary uses for this laptop - word processing and photo editing for the most part. I like the extra elements such as the sidebar. This laptop also had a card reader built in which means I no longer have to contend with the hassle of finding the USB cables for multiple devices that I wish to connect.
My issues with it - that through all the technical guidance I have sought, my wireless internet is inconsistent. I am told the issue lies with my laptop and as such have had to purchase an Ethernet cable. About 3 weeks into using this Ethernet cable, the port would no longer 'grip' the Ethernet cable so I had to purchase a usb Ethernet cable adapter. This now works but obviously the expense has amounted to disruption with my work and has been costly. My other issue with my previous Acer, my mothers and now mine is that power cable doesn't hold firmly in the back. I had to buy a whole new laptop previously because the port for the power cable fell into the back of the laptop and nothing could be done for it. I now have to be careful when plugging it in.
Otherwise this laptop is efficient and has stood the test of time although now I feel the hardware is outdated and for the prices of laptops these days, you could get a better machine for an excellent price. It has stood me in good stead over the two years I've had it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable machine.
Summary: Excellent above basic laptop, problems with ports

- 12/08/09 Awesome! Thank you for the lengthy comment - you've given me food for thought as I am always chasing after the battery cable with this thing - used to have XP - such a practical, straightforward OS! Thanks! |

- 11/08/09 Very true review for the excellent product. However I would suggest/recommend usage of XP instead of Vista to increase battery performance. You can have dual system which would let you keep both utilities. The fact is that if you use XP while on battery mode you may have about 30% less battery consumption as compared to Vista. Try out and you will see. My acer's battery runs for about 3 hours even after 3 years! |
