I have recently purchased this laptop for my partner who is moving away abroad. It is very easy to use and also is pretty enough to keep her happy. It came with Windows Vista, this is the first time i've used this operating system and i like many of it's features paticularly when you highlight a tab at the bottom of the screen and it give syou a preview.
Some of the acer software installed with the laptop is not that great and is quite annoying having to un-install as they are all on autorun when the laptop boots up so if you do not change the preferences or un-install them you have a whole load of applications popping up when you first turn on the laptop, this can be annoying and very confusing for my partner.
In the limited time that I have owned the laptop I have noticed that the mouse pad is very sensitive and have had to turn off the click when you press the pad feature as it is overly sensitive.
Battery life is good on the laptop, but as i have not had it for very long I do not no how well it will last over time.
Overall i am happy with the speed of this machine, as it is for my partner she will only really be using it for surfing, streaming, web cam and the odd bit of work so it doesn't need to be much quicker. It comes with an adequate hardrive size for her.
Overall this is a good product at a good price and would recommend it to anyone I could have done far worse with the money I spent on this product, the only thing I have complaints about is the mouse pad, but this can be rectified by turning the click feature off on the touch pad.
Now I could start this review off with me rattling on about the specifications of the laptop, and boggle your mind with techno jargon... but I would be wasting my time because there is a tab called "Technical Details" that explains all this... I am here to give my personal feelings about this machine.
I am actually writing this review on my Acer Aspire 5715Z, so you can be assured it works.
The beauty of this laptop is that it has a big monitor. It isn't a massive widescreen, but it is great for playing films on.
The realistic battery life is about 2 hours, which is actually quite good, and it works well with vista.
The range on the WIFI receiver is also very good, and it is better than some of the ones I have seen in the upper end models of Sony laptops.
It does tend to get a little hot if you are using on your lap, so a pair of thick jeans or a cushion is advised.
There is a MINOR technical fault, and that is the touch pad is REALLY sensitive, and the slightest breeze makes it think you are clicking the mouse, and therefore it closes windows, moved the cursor in mid sentence etc... so I disabled touchpad clicking, and use the buttons instead.
The sound quality is great, and the RAM and everything internal is more than adequate for everything EXCEPT gaming... if you want to PC game, buy a desktop PC or an AlienWare Laptop.
All in all a great piece of kit
This acer aspire carries acers so called gemstone design. This is a new design of laptop from acer and is being used in more and more of their laptops because of its popularity with customers. It does have split opinions however, some love it and some people really cant stand the look of it. I however think its great, its black and cream colour, with a lovely glossy lid looks cool and very neat and tidy. Also what I like about this Is its clearly a design that acer has come up with and kept, and it clearly represents their company. a lot of laptops from other manufacturers just look the same as others and you cant tell what brand they are, this however, much like the look of apples imacs you can tell they belong to which company.
The laptop is of an average size, its 36.6 cm wide, 27.4 cm in length and is 4.3 cm in height. So its not really the thinnest laptop ever and in my opinion the base of this one seems a bit too chunky for the laptop its self.
Its screen is of an average size too, it has a 15,4 inch screen which also features active matrix technology, this is being used by so much more laptop manufacturers nowadays as it makes the screen lighter, therefore making the laptop lighter, is makes the image quality so much better than a normal TFT screen and it also makes the response time a lot better, which makes videos look sharper, photos look sharper and game playing look better than ever before.
The installed ram on this is a reasonable 1gb, it isn't the best amount of ram on a laptop however its pretty average and you can get good performance out of 1 gb of ram.
Also if the 1gb of ram isn't enough for you (and it probably wont be in a lot of cases) then you can easily upgrade your ram to 4gb. This will just make everything even faster than it already is, so if you so really need your laptop to be a bit faster then you have got this option at a later date. This is really good because what tends to happen is that as your laptop gets older, and your add more programs and files, it eventually gets slower and slower, this is just something that happens, so having this extra 3gb of ram available to be installed into the laptop means that if it does start to run slower than you want it to, then you can easily have extra ram installed. A bad thing about this option though, is that it can be costly to do, especially if you cant do it your self and you might have to pay a computer technician to do the work for you.
Also a bit of a glitch is that it could, and I do say could, void the warranty, now I am unsure about the warranty of this specific laptop however it usually goes, if you alter any setting of the laptop by unscrewing things inside of it, then usually the warranty goes, as if it no longer works it could be your fault. So this is something to think about and look into before you start altering things inside the laptop.
In terms of extra features this laptop is pretty good, it not only has a pretty good web cam installed in the top of it, but it also has a 5 in 1 memory card reader. The card reader read any of SD Memory Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, MultiMediaCard, xD-Picture Card, and the web cam, which isn't great quality but its still a webcam. These extra features if bought separately would cost about £50, so its great to have these things built into a laptop.
In terms of portability this laptop isn't the best, its quite large compared to the portable laptops you can buy today that are specifically designed for this. Its also relatively heavy and weighs 2.8kgs. It battery life is the best out of its lack of portability though as it can last around 3 hours, which is reasonably good for any laptop, especially one which isn't custom built for portability.
Altogether this is a good laptop, but really its quite basic, it has good features built into which make it better value for money. A good thing about it though is that you can easily get one of these for just £350, and with all its features this is a really cheap buy.
Well friends this brand is coming a long way up because of the range of features it provides and not the gamor world attached in promotion of brand in india. The laptop has got good customization features about increasing or decreasing RAM though it comes with 2 GB we can reduce it to 1 GB and cut down the costs. As 2 GB is not required for me in official usage. I have one more lappy for gaming purposes. Even 1 GB ram is enough for games. The graphics of this model are accurate as i tested it with different games of EA sports like fifa and cricket 2007. The battery backup while gaming was about 2 hours thats pretty decent. Well one draw back pushes this brand back and that is the customer support.
This is the flaw which acer has now. The customer support do not entertain any software related equerries. And only hardware. So we have to spend money to check software compatibility issues. Not fair. Anywasy the product is very good for a person who has good technical knowledge..
I'm not very technically minded, but as the specs for the machine are mentioned above, I thought I'd give a personal experience of this laptop.
I bought this laptop a few weeks ago for just over 300 pounds from Amazon, and as usual, they delivered the computer in super-fast time, just 12 hours from the purchase being made.
I really like this computer, which I was told was being sold reduced because it has HD-DVD instead of blu-ray, the latter of which is now the recognised new format. This wasn't a problem for me as I have no real reason to use these enhanced DVDs, I'm entirely happy just with normal DVDs, which this computer plays without problems. If I ever need blu-ray, I'll have to save up for a Playstation 3!
The computer has 2GB of RAM, and I've found this to be more than enough for the computer to run quickly and effectively. I've installed the software I need, and I've had no problems with speed, or any difficulties at all with the machine other than one small issue.
The only problem I've had on two occasions is that when going into standby mode the laptop screen goes black, and although you can hear that Windows has logged back on, it requires a restart to restore the computer. This is however a minor fault, and takes just seconds to deal with.
The in-built web-cam is very handy, and can be started just be going to the start menu. It can be quite frightening to suddenly see yourself on the screen though, especially if you're not looking your best!
The battery life is good, it lasts around 140 minutes for me, although this can probably be extended if you keep the brightness of the screen down. The laptop is also relatively light, so is very portable, as I've had "laptops" in the past that I haven't wanted to carry very far because of their weight.
I've had Acers in the past, and I've heard some people complain that they're a cheap computer make. Although it's true that their computers are often relatively cheap, I've never had a problem with the quality of an Acer, but I have had serious issues with numerous Sony Vaios. So sometimes the argument of you get what you pay for isn't really valid.
Overall, a very nice computer, although its white layout can look a little strange at first, this was no doubt because I've always had black laptops. The outside of the case is in shiny black, which makes the computer probably look more classy than it actually is!
However, overall, the computer appears to be very reliable, and well worth the money.
I love my acer aspire, it cost £349 from tesco and has 2 gigs of RAM wow! Even after i have installled all my fave software it flies. It has more than enough USB ports and a PCMIA slot.
This acer is especially good for comes with watching DVDs, with its widescreen and enhanced sound (via headphones) I prefer it to my TV for watching movies.
I had no setup hastles, vista runs smoothly and while its a large laptop it is still light enough to be portable.
The battery has about 2 hours away from the charger which is average. Overall this is a very reliable machine.
The intel processor has all the power I need and the hard drive has plenty of room. It runs games very well considering its not a specialist games machine. I think this is down to the duel core processor, making it more capable than its predecessors.
After having an acer I would never consider another brand of laptop.
The Acer Aspire 5715Z is my 5th laptop computer and ive owned it since new for roughly six months and so far i can honestly give it a thumbs up.
It comes with alot of features as standard, which includes a built in webcam featuring Crystal Eye Technology (Just means the picture is sharper) and a Crystal Brite LCD screen which is very bright and sharp. This acer was much cheaper than its rivals with similar features and spec.
So far its been lightning fast in its processing speeds and quality, and i think is has only froze once. Reliability is awesome both internally and externally. Its a very hard wearing laptop when compared with my previous laptops from the likes of Sony, Dell, Compaq and Toshiba. Ease of use is a no brainer, with buttong for wireless on/off, internet access, volume, brightness etc all easily visable on the keyboard.
Battery life is good too. I can watch a full two hour movie with the laptop not plugged into the mains and still have battery left.
Great product, dont be put off just because its not a Dell.
