Acer Aspire 5742Z
Advantages: Great graphics, lightweight, looks good, good battery life, quick, good memory
Disadvantages: Not very sturdy, tricky mousepad
We got our first laptop in about 2007, it was an Acer Aspire 5315, and I use it pretty much everyday for pretty much everything, and its still going strong now, with no damage, little wear and tear, and its my faithful companion, in fact, I am using it right now!
I couldnt help get a little excited when a few months ago my husband brought home a brand new Acer laptop, the Aspire 5742z. Getting it out of the box, I loved how sleek it looked, althought the same width as my original laptop, this one was definately thinner, my old one is about twice as thick as the new one, and it was much more lightweight than the old one too. The cover has a tiny little zig zag pattern across it, and has the usual Acer logo in the centre.
Now I am hardly the most technical person, the most techy things I could tell you about the laptop is that it has Windows 7 installed, and it has a built in webcam, so I am going to just type out the spec off the box :
15.6 HD screen
Intel Pentium P6200 Dual core processor
4GB DDR3 RAM
Windows7 Home Premium Edition 64 bit
Being honest, that doesnt mean too much to me, except it makes dvd's and has Windows7, but Im sure there are people out there who want to know these things!
I was very impressed upon turning the laptop on, the colours are crystal clear, and we have watched dvd's and things on it and the viewing is incredible, almost as good as watching our television.
It is quick, it loads programs up faster than what our old one does, and it has a lot more memory too. We have roughly the same kind of things on each laptop, and whereas on the old one we dont have much memory left, it has hardly made a dent in the new one.
There are so many programs and bits already on the 5742z, that although we have had it a few months now, we probably havent used half of the things on it. I love the webcam, its come in handy to take photos of the kids when we are having a cuddle, and it does also record too.
One of my favourite tools on it so far is the snipping tool, it allows you 'snip' a section of a page you have open and save it on your laptop, almost like the copy and paste tool but I find this a lot more precise.
It also comes with the Acer game arcade pre installed, which is good for the kids. Its come in handly this past week as my daughter has had some time off school after being in hospital for a few days, and when boredom has kicked in she has played games. There are lots of games on there that you get an hours trial of, when the hour runs out you then have the option to purchase the full game (although they are expensive!)
The charge holds really well on the 5742z, a couple of hours charging gives you a good 4/5 hours worth of battery life, and if we leave it charging overnight, with minimal usage we can get it to last most of the day before it needs charging again.
Although the 5742z is packed with great features, loads of great acessories and has amazing graphics and is crystal clear for watching films etc on, I dont think it is as sturdy as its older siblings. My 5 year old 5315 has been knocked about and I have dropped it a few times and it has been used constantly, it shows hardly any signs of damage. The 5742z was dropped once when my youngest daughter knocked it off the sofa by accident, it fell about a foot and half, and not only did it lose 2 of its keys, the next time it was switched off, my husband couldnt get it to switch on again, and I had to go into the factory settings and do some fiddling about to get it to work again.
I also find the mouse more tricky to use. I find it moves more stiffly than my old one, and it is highly annoying when we are browsing the internet and it is so sensitive that if you slightly catch the cornor or the mouse pad, all of a sudden the page you are on will become huge, or so tiny you cant see anything, because of the zoom control to the right hand side of the mouse pad. It is really easy to accidentally catch it, but then its a lot harder to fix as you have to hold down the ctrl key and slide your finger up and down the line on the mousepad, but it does require some effort to make it work.
On the whole, I find my old laptop much easier to use and more durable so I use it daily and find it simpler. If we are wanting to watch a dvd on a laptop, or use some more fancy programs, we use the newer one.
A quick search of the internet has shown that the current selling price of the Acer Aspire 5742z is anything between £329 and £379.
It is a good laptop, with lots of memory and gadgety things. If you want something basic and easy I would recomend an older one from the Aspire range, if you want something more high tech with lots of memory and better programs and speed, the Aspire 5742z is a great laptop for those needs.
Summary: Another good laptop from the Aspire range
