Advantages: Good hardware, powerful, fairly straight-forward to use

Disadvantages: Annoying features, bad design, some reliability issues

Anyone wanting a powerful laptop for a decent price ideal for web-browsing, data storage, work and multimedia functions could do a lot worse than the Acer 5920. It is nippy even when running a range of demanding applications and doesn't suffer from overheating as much as some laptops can.

However not everything about this laptop is a success, and there are some drawbacks ranging from the pedantic to some more serious in nature. The laptop appears to have been designed to cram as much media functionality in as possible, and the software that is pre-installed is cumbersome and much less user-friendly than the more widely used and freely available. Also you must factor in the hotkeys linked to this software, which are placed next to the keyboard and are ultra-sensitive. Frequently you will find yourself accidentally opening up a programme you don't want to use, and while they can be disabled this is a tiresome and frustrating task.

Also the laptop as a whole can be quite unreliable. My own laptop has often had problems with crashing, even with frequent cleanups and de-frags, and now cannot be left alone for more than 10 minutes without freezing and requiring a hard restart. Again, frustrating considering the otherwise good quality of the hardware.

Overall it is a good laptop ideal for students who want to use it to combine work and play, but any serious user will no doubt discover faults that, while not overly destructive, are sometimes infuriating if you want to do something quickly and simply.

Summary: Good for people who want an entertainment laptop, but not without faults.
