Advantages: Raw power, graphics, inbuilt gadgets
Disadvantages: Less batery than its less powerful siblings
Let me start by saying that I have an acer aspire 8920g model, with the same specifications as the one I am reviewing.
From a purely aesthetic stand point the behmoth desktop replacement looks stunning. From the stunning black finish on the lid, to the silver finish by the wrist rest, the aspire is dressed to impress. Its like a hippo in a silky dress, albeit a nicely shaped hippo, and a very posh dress. So despite looking great, you'll never be able to realy look past its rather large size, which will make the average persons lap start to ache after only a short use time.
The screen is a real beauty, full HD, 1080p with a decent response time of 8ms means that its bleeding-eye sexy. But it's also a power hog, meaning long term useage of the screen will need to be plugged in, defeating the whole point of the laptop. To accompany this screen is the high def winner, a blu-ray drive, delivering great hd video. The GPU on the beast handles the blu-ray films very well for a smooth and fluidic playback.
Another thing the laptop is big on is raw processing power, for a laptop. At a real dual core 2.4 ghz the laptop will zip through your internet (aided by built in wireless), videos, pictures, word documents and emails. Coming preloaded with vista helps with a noticably fast start up and good looking visual effects, all of which rarely suffer slow down. Soon however you'll forget how fast this machine is, becomeing blaise about it, until you try to use a slower machine and realise just how lucky you are.
The gpu also handles games very well for a mid-range card, delivering mid to high graphics and reasonably good resolutions on all modern games. This means that whilst its good for the occasional gamer, the more hardcore people will find the dropped frames in there game experience a deal breaker.
The inbuilt webcam suffers from freezes and poor resolution, made notisably worse in low light. The inbuilt cinedash is gimmic, allowing touch pad access to the media players in the PC without having to even wiggle your mouse. A gimmic, if a useful gimmic.
The build quality is superb, with a slight screen flex, which is to be expected with a screen this large (18.4'). The bulk means that the unit feels solid and wellbuilt, with nothing easily coming loose or falling off.
Summary: Fantastic for all uses, if you have the money!
