Advantages: value for money, stylish design, amazing graphics, lots of memory
Disadvantages: Comes with many uneccesary installed features
I recently purchased The Sims 3 and was dismayed (but not at all suprised!) when my old Tobisha laptop was unable to run the game. So I was faced with the task of buying a gaming laptop on a budget of £500 to £600, which seemed an impossible task! I literally searched for days to try and find a suitable gaming laptop in my price range until I finally came across The Acer Aspire 6930G. I brought it from Comet for £599.
It had extremley impressive specifactions, the very best I'd seen in it's price range and appeared to represent fantastic value for money.
I was dubious that it would be too good to be true!
Below are the listed specifications for the make I brought:
Screen size: 16 inches
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P7450
Processor speed: 2.0 GHz
Memory (RAM): 4 GB
Storage (hard drive): 320 GB
Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium
Dedicated graphics: NVIDIA 9600MGT 1 GB
Optical drive: Plays & records CDs and DVDs
USB 2.0 slots 3
Media card slots: 5
Built-in webcam
Battery life: Up to 2.5 hours
The same laptop was also avaliable for about £540 to £560. Often this meant a downgrade in memory to 3GB instead of 4GB or 256mb dedicated graphics instead of 512mb. However, these are still extremley good specs and it a nice option for those on an even tighter budget than myself.
ADVANTAGES
This laptop plays The Sims 3 spectaculary well. The game is fast when I play it, even with all the graphics settings on their highest level. This is because of the fantastic 512mb Nividia graphics card which the laptop comes with. As the Sims 3 is a very graphically demanding game, the fact that it works perfectly on this laptop shows that it should be able to sucessfully run many graphically demanding games
It's also really impressive and stylish to look at it. I'd never buy a laptop just because it looks good but even I couldn't fail to be impressed by the sleek design of this Acer.
It has loads of nice little features including a textured touchpad, full sized keyboard, and a built in webcam.
One feature I particulary like is the built in volume contol panel located just above the keyboard. This feature is useful if you want to adjust the volume during a game, as you dont have to minimise the game to click on the speaker symbol in the task bar.
I also like how the laptop closes. The hinge between monitor and keyboard is a circular design which not only looks attractive but is also reassuringly sturdy.
Like most modern computers, the laptop comes with Vista premium operating system. Personally, I prefer XP as Vista comes with many annoying features, most noticeably the User Account control issue. However, it's an operating system which I am used to and so comfortable with and I do find it easier to edit and organise my photographs on Vista than I do on XP. So if you've used Vista before and are familar with it, you will have no problems here.
DISADAVANTAGES
The design, whilst being stylish, is not really that pratical. The glossy black design on the front of the laptop gets dirty easily. I'd only had it two days when somebody remarked on the visible fringer print marks on the surface which I had to wipe away with a cloth.
Furthermore, the game comes with lots of unnecssary services and programs which take up memory. It is annoying to have to unistall these these in order to free up memory. For example, it appeared that my laptop had came with many games which I was excited about. However, these games are trial versions, usually limited to about half an hour/an hour gameplay before your encouraged to buy them. It is irritating to have to go through and unistall all of these after only being able to play them once for a limited period. It is even more irritating to find game you like only to realise that you can only continue playing it if you buy it.
WHERE TO BUY
I brought mine from Comet and was extremley happy with the service I recieved. Delivery was fast and I managed to find a discount code to knock £30 off the price. I'd reccomend buying from here.
www.AcerDirect.co.uk and www.laptopsdirect.co.uk had fantastic deals on this laptop with large amounts of money knocked off the original price so it's worth a look on there too.
I saw prices for this same make of laptop ranging from £450 to £750 depending on the specs. For this reason, I'd also reccomend having a look on price comparision websites before you buy, such as www.kelkoo.co.uk.
SUMMARY
I adore this laptop! It's amazing value for money, stylish and efficent and perfect for gaming. It's massive memory capabilities mean it's capable of handling whatever you many throw at it, in my case, from games to work documents and video files. You will not find another laptpop with specifications at this price!
Summary: The best laptop I've ever owned, the perfect machine for my gaming needs!
