I have one of these machines. basically i wanted to get my children a cheap laptop to do their school work and just basically keep them off my work desktop!
Looks wise, its a basic, blackish grey laptop with the ACER logo in the corner, none of your flashy colours and finishes here i'm afraid. The 15.6" screen is fine, lots bigger than a netbook which is usually around 10 - 12". Makes things a lot easier to read.
For children its a good little machine. Its a basic 1gb, which is fine for basic things like using microsoft word and research on the internet.
If you have children that like playing a lot of computer games (i'm a bore and mine only play their console) then you may need a better spec, graphics card and RAM wise.
Depending on which internet provider you use, this machine can be a little slow for some, if thats the case I would suggest taking the machine into a computer shop and getting the memory and RAM upgraded.
Storage wise 160gb is plenty. Unless you use and save alot of graphics - or your children do, this will last a fair few years, will hold a few thousand downloaded albums and things anyway.
Microsoft Vista as standard. Usually fairly easy to use. Most downloadable programs have the optional vista slection, although there are still a few out there that don't.
Keyboard and number pads as standard. Is wireless and without looking at it (don't want to disturb the kids) has a bluetooth detection button at the top. I haven't used this little gizmo yet, but at somepoint i may give it a whirl.
DVD rw drive - another thing a laptop has and a netbook doesn't. has 3 usb ports, microphone and headphone sockets. Socket to connect your printer, and also has a socket where you can connect an outside monitor too. This can be quite handy, if you've downloaded a tv programme and the laptop screen is too small to use.
For a basic laptop this is fine and dandy, for anything that requires wordprocessing, easy desktop publishing and internet connection this is a great little buy.
Battery life is usually dependent on the things you are doing, downloading things can often use more battery life than word processing and similar tasks. Normal battery life will be about 4 hours roughly.
