Advantages: Light, good quality, not expensive
Disadvantages: No network card, possibly small hard drive
This laptop is designed to be mid-range and portable. As such it is fairly slim and lightweight but has all of the peripherals on board unlike others which insist that you have a floppy or cd-rom as a completely separate unit. Specifications: 650 Mhz Celeron Processor 64 Mb SDRAM (in one slot of two available) 5 Gb Hard Drive 4 Mb Dedicated Video/graphics 12.1 Inch TFT Screen (1024x768Max) NiMh Battery (2.5hours life) USB Ports, Serial etc 2 PC Card slots 24X Cd-Rom 1.44 Floppy 56 Kbps Modem built in. Windows Millenium Edition Pc-Cillin anti virus. Comments on the spec; 1) The processor is fairly standard, works well as a mobile chip and stays cool, hence a very quiet fan. 2) Memory is also standard but at the current low prices of memory it's worth buying some more and putting it in yourself. 64Mb may be fine for typing but the moment you try and graphics or games it slows down. 3) 5Gb hard drive is small in comparison to the latest machines but if this isn't your main computer don't worry about it to much. However if this is going to be your main computer you may want to invest in a portable back up option such as Zip drive, or writable-cd-rom drive, as 5Gb can fill quickly if you don't watch it. 4) The screen has excellent clarity. It may be small in overall dimensions but the colour depth and resolution are very good. 5) Windows Me is set to be the standard home operating system and it far surpasses windows 95 or 98. It has the stability of NT without all the compatibility trouble and levels of admin rights. The only thing that I think is missing from the spec is a network card. But if this isn't an office machine then you won't need one. Two PC's can always be connected using a serial cabe and the "direct cable connection" wizrd within windows. It's fair to say that I like, or love, this laptop. To me it really is
a mobile desktop, capable of running the vast majority of modern software and will certainly last a good few years of future development. Acer are a highly reputable manufacturer and the build quality is solid. It's lightweight as well whcih means that you don't strain your back carrying it around. As with all laptops the manufacturers guarantee is only for a year, parts and labour, so as much as it might gall me to say this, try to buy your laptop from PC World with an extended warranty. I was able to haggle the price of my extended warranty down by 60%. The discount is simply by the managers discretion. It is in their interests to sell an extended warranty and some money is better than none. See this review for more details Home > Computers > Computer Companies and Retailers > PC World > PC World in general>PC World "I used to work there". My last laptop from there died within it's five year warranty and I bought this one on the insurance from the extended warranty. Overall this is a excellent piece of kit. Well worth the investment for both a dedicated laptop user or as a desktop replacement.
