By no means a new model laptop, but I felt compelled to bring you a review of my son's laptop for two reasons. Firstly, to let you know what it is capable of and secondly, because you can pick these up for brgain prices nowadays.
So, I picked this up for my 9 year old son. I really wanted an Apple for him, as that is what I have experience with and I knew he would get on well with it. It only needed to handle some educational stuff and internet, so nothing flash or too expensive. I paid £123.00 for this 12-inch version on ebay and I could not believe my luck. I got it packed in a refurb box (plain brown), but with all the manuals, cables and disks. The laptop itself looked brand new, now a mark on it, and all the stickers in the right places and cover on the keyboard. I suspect it was a refurbished Apple Store model that had been sitting in this other company warehouse for a while.
Well, I added another 512MB of memory (£15) and installed the latest OS X Leopard on it just recently. It runs so so nicely. Connects to the internet wirelessly and although not as fast as my MacBook Pro, it does exactly what it wass bought for.
My son surfs the internet, goes onto his favourite miniclips website, researches things for his homework, prints out to a little inkjet printer. The screen is nice and bright, very evenly lit. Battery lasts around 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Performance is pretty good, especially considering it is running the latest OS. He is well chuffed. Even when offered a new later model, he said that it was no bother, he likes what he has. Result!
So, if you need something just for internet and email, it proves that you do not have to spend a fortune.
WONDERFUL MACHINE, COMPARED TO MY P.C. COMPAQ DESK MODEL ON STEROIDS. THE LITTLE BUGGER RUNS RINGS AROUND ME. WITH LESS, IT IS MORE. AND LEAST WE FORGET THE SECURITY FEATURES BUILT INTO MAC. I HAVE BEEN A PC GUY ALL MY LIFE, NOW HOWEVER I AM HAVING A MAC ATTACK. TAKE A LOOK AT THE SPEC'S ON A G5 RUNNING BOTH WINDOWS AND MAC PROGRAMS AND TELL ME YOU DON'T WANT ONE. THE FUTURE IS NOW AND APPLE HAS IT ALL OVER ANY I.B.M. BASED COMPUTER. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE 4 T.B. IN YOUR DESKTOP. YOU COULD STORE YOUR ENTIRE COLLECTION OF VIDEOS, CD'S, CAMERA PHOTO'S AND STILL RUN A SMALL COUNTRY.
SO LONG PC, HELLO MAC!!!
Well Apple are lovely aren't they but unfortunately their stuff still doesn't work properly on the internet. This laptop is another one of those products which looks nice and is pretty good for professional design work but the limitations of the platform outweigh the benefits.
Any decent pc can do what a mac does these days, the pdf has made design work easier to work with and the range of software is more readily available. Games, for instane, still aren't really produced for the mac platform as they are for the pc. Other significant web programs don't work well either, some banking sites and exchanges such as Betfair won't run at all.
Looks nice and has some cudos but just doesn't work as well as the pc equivalent.
