Advantages: Looks, Simplicity, Works out-of-the-box, battery life, power
Disadvantages: Case feels a little cheap, Screen attracts fingerprints
Before buying a macbook i looked at other manufacturers such as Dell and HP, but none of them offered the instant out-of-the-box functionality that the Macbook did.
My Macbook was purchased direct from Apple and took just two days to arrive. And, as promised, it worked straight out of the box. I just pressed power filled out my user details and i was going. The setup hooked me onto my wireless internet and i was away.
The first thing that struck me was the size of the thing, it's only slightly thicker than an average sized hardback notepad and weighs just over 2 kg, in other words it's a perfect size. Before the Macbook i had a HP ultra-portable which was too small, too slow and too ugly. The Macbook is just right in all of those categories.
The powerful Core2Duo processor really packs a punch; all of my applications launch instantly and run perfectly. The 1 GB of memory keeps the machine running well, however, if you plan to run a lot of media editing applications then i would suggest that you upgrade to 2 GB. I run iwork08 without a hitch and iphoto runs very quickly.
The feel of the machine is very clean and crisp. Apple really has gone above and beyond with this one, it's perfect. The 13,3 inch glossy screen is great for watching movies. Just a note for skeptical readers: the glossy screen rarely (if ever) reflects anything in the background. When it comes to using the Macbook in a brightly lit area or outside there is less reflection than there would be on a Matte display.
Battery life on the Macbook. Is better than almost all other laptops out there: I can get about 4 to 6 hours while doing general work such as word processing and browsing the web and I can get about 3 to 4 hours while doing photo or video editing or watching a DVD.
In summary: if you are looking for a great looking; reasonably sized; powerful laptop to use everyday then i can see no reason not to go for the Macbook. It's the ideal way to switch to the mac platform and even if you don't like the operating system (Leopard) then you can alway install Xp or Vista.
Summary: A great way to enter the Mac market
