Advantages: Portability, Security, OS, Appearance, Value,
Disadvantages: Combo Drive, Scratches (Common), Cracks (Rarer), Some Features Inferior To Some PC Rival's
I purchased my MacBook over a year ago and unlike any laptop I've used before, it still runs 'as new', all without any OS reinstallation or defragmentation.
While I have upgraded the RAM to 4GB, the standard 1GB was enough before I required more for having several fairly heavy documents open at once. I bought from a catalogue for £900, not knowing of the Apple Store at the time, but I still feel that the MacBook was worth it.
It is a relatively small laptop and isn't particularly heavy either, making portability an excellent feature of the computer. The keyboard took quite some getting used with its 'chicklet' key design, but once I learned techniques I was able to get back into my touch typing rhythm.
The operating system is excellent and even though I had seldom used OS X prior owning the MacBook, I picked it up very quickly. For a time I used Vista Ultimate under Bootcamp, it worked well but only recognised 2.9GB RAM (even below 32 bit recognition strangely).
Unfortunately it isn't all good news. The technologically prehistoric combo drive isn't the best, lacking even DVD-R/RW. The notably attractive case soon loses some of its looks through scratching easily, even under careful use. The model is also prone to case cracks, though fortunately Apple have acknowledged this and will fix it free of charge even outside of warranty. Finally, I will point out that this is no gamer's computer. With only 144MB integrated VRAM it certainly won't play graphically dependent gamed.
Despite some issues though, I would have no qualms recommending the MacBook as an excellent all round consumer laptop.
Summary: A good consumer laptop and a great entry level model

- 10/06/09 I love my Macbook! But the white colour is hard to keep very clean, especially on the keyboard. |
