Advantages: From the offset you can tell that this is a good quality computer, and it certainly lives up to that
Disadvantages: It is somewhat pricey compared to other laptops, but if you can afford it then it is will worth it.
I purchased my MacBook around 6 months ago, despite being relatively pricey if you compare them on paper with similar "Windows" laptops the extra price really is well worth it, considering the benefits that they come with. My first impressions were that the build quality was incredible, especially compared with other laptops that I have owned in the past. You can quite easily pick one of these up with one hand, and not hear any creaks or see the entire thing bending, due to its "Unibody" construction.
The quality of these really is second to none, a true example of "you get what you pay for", and the operating system, OS X, continues to show the MacBook's quality. Due to it's Unix roots it is inherently secure, think of it as a more advanced version of Vista's User Account Control.
My primary use of this computer is web development work, so the issue of Windows only applications isn't really a problem for me, despite this Microsoft have released Office for Mac, so compatibility really isn't an issue.
What makes this laptop differ from many of it's cheaper competitors are the small things, no, it doesn't come with dedicated graphics or a bazillion GB of RAM, but it uses it's hardware effectively, and selects arguably the best technology. The use of DDR3 RAM is an example of this, bang up to date technology in a laptop, which hasn't even reached the mainstream PC market yet.
Another example is it's battery indicator, rather than having to turn on the laptop to check the battery life it has a small little button that illuminates a series of lights to tell you how much power there is remaining; which usually isn't a problem given the huge 5 hour battery life! But when it does come to charging Apple have even thought of that, with their MagSafe connector - this is the kind of thing that most companies wouldn't even have thought of, instead of having a typical plug held in by friction this uses magnetism to keep the connector in place. The advantage of this being that when you walk too far from the power cable instead of falling in a comical fashion the cable simply comes out and drops to the floor, with no hurt laptops (or people), this has saved me (and my laptop) on countless occasions.
The software that isn't included is a notable point; unlike many cheaper manufacturers it doesn't come with the typical array of "bloatware", so from the start you can enjoy the computing experience, rather than having to remove trial software that just slows your computer down. The included software is just as good too! Apple's iLife suite allows you to do the kind of things that, out of the box, you could only dream of with a PC.
The only real thing that is letting this down is the lack of a FireWire port, something that the previous generation did have, although in reality I never really use this, it would just be there in case I wanted it.
Summary: Well thought out computer, with lots of little things that go a long way.
