CHECK OUT MY UPDATE AT THE END OF THIS REVIEW, I'M FAR FROM IMPRESSED!!!
I received my Apple MacBook for Christmas 2008 and have enjoyed using it for many of its features. The MacBook itself is a lovely compact size with a 13" screen, and looks very stylish in white with the Apple logo on the lid of the MacBook which lights up when in use. The screen is bright and the colours are amazingly bright and deep. The icons for different applications and programs are set at the bottom of the screen for ease of use.
One thing I found strange about the MacBook was not having a 'right click' button on the mouse. Being used to PCs, I found this difficult at first but there are lots of shortcuts which provide the same function as clicking the right button on a PCs mouse. I bought a book to give me the lowdown on MacOS X, the operating system used by the MacBook which proved very useful, as this was my first Mac.
Primarily I use it to browse the internet using Apple's Safari browser. Easy to use, very straightforward. I purchased Microsoft Office for Mac which gave me Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Any documents created on this are compatible with Microsoft Office on a PC and vice versa. This was very useful when transferring documents to and from work. The Word program is good because you can also create publications similar to Microsoft publisher but with more sophistication of design, much more sleek than anything a PC could produce!
There are lots of fun features on the MacBook, such as the built-in webcam which allows you to chat on line with others, take photographs and alter them with weird and wonderful effects. This provided me with hours of fun on Christmas day! GarageBand is also a great program which comes with the MacBook. It is a recording studio which allows you to create your own songs using either pre-recorded loops, a virtual keyboard or you can plug in instruments via a midi-keyboard. There are loads of instrument sounds already installed as well as loops of music of many genres and the results are fantastic - a must for anyone who wants to write and record their own music and fun to mess around with for those without musical talent!!
The battery life is not as good as I would have hoped, it will give about 4 hours of continuous use before needing to be charged. The power cable is a MagnaSafe cable, which means that the bit that plugs into your MacBook is secured with a magnet, so if the cable gets pulled, it will just pull straight out rather than pull your MacBook onto the floor! A great idea, I thought. My powercable, however, ceased to work after a couple of months of having the MacBook and after looking on the Apple website for reviews of this, I found that a number of people had experienced similar problems. A replacement cost about £60 so I was not very happy with this. Time will tell if the replacement cable lasts well or not!
****UPDATE***** THE AFOREMENTIONED POWERCABLE (THE NEW ONE) BURNED OUT YESTERDAY!!!!!!! I ONLY BOUGHT IT IN AUGUST, NOT LONG BEFORE I ORIGINALLY WROTE THIS REVIEW. I AM INCREDIBLY ANNOYED WITH THIS HENCE THE CAPITAL LETTERS AND INTEND TO GET IN TOUCH WITH APPLE TO SEE WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT, I'M NOT PREPARED TO PAY ANOTHER £60 FOR SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO CONK OUT AFTER A FEW MONTHS!!!!! RANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To conclude, I feel the MacBook is great for surfing the net, using the fun features such as GarageBand, watching DVDs, iTunes, the built-in webcam and organising photographs. A good entertainment laptop.
Summary: Great fun to use for entertainment purposes.
