A mix of style and substance, the Apple Macbook looks great, is very easy to use and is very reliable. Once you switch to a Mac, it is difficult to envisage ever using anything else - it just works.

      Beautiful.

The Apple MacBook could have me hooked purely on the beautiful and minimalistic design. The Product has aged well from its release, most that are for sale now are second hand from 2008/2009 and sell for anything between £200 and £400 depending on their condition and properties. The interior is largely interchangeable; This/my model has Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz and 2 GB of RAM with HDD 250GB, running on Mac OS X 10.6 (this is easily upgraded to Mac OS X Lion) and 2 USB ports as standard. For a long time this model has served me well up until i had a large amount of applications and software running on it. Most laptops have screens of 15 inches, the MacBook has a 13.3 inch which may sound small but once you normalise to this it seems like a perfect size. Of course the laptop comes with the LED backlit screen, the built in camera and the disc drive but nowadays that not special, when this came out these things were more impressive. The laptop has held its value rather well, I am selling mine soon and with aim for around £250 and will probably get that value. Purchasing options also include the option of buying a refurbished laptop which can save around £50-100. They have now discontinued this model in stores. The only issue with this amazing piece of design is the body of the laptop. The edges of the laptop are not particularly well structured. NB: I am not the only one who has this, it is not based on how its treated. Its slightly more that the old wear and tear, chips from the white plastic edging are visible. The laptops internals are still fully functioning but the use of plastic frame work has meant, because of the old age of the laptop, the body work does deteriorate. Ultimately if you are looking for a cheap second hand laptop this is the best way to go! If you 'don't buy Apple' or think its so different and that you wont understand it - you are wrong. It is very similar to your current platform. Things may be renamed and you may want to ask someone for points of knowledge but its straight forward. A smart, sophisticated and clean piece of kit that shows the classic Apple design off very well.

      Highly recommended.

When I purchased my brand new macbook, I had little experience of laptops and what made them good/bad. I decided on the macbook purely because it was white and looked nice! It stood out from the many other laptops in the shop. Little did I know, this laptop is brilliant!! Having owned my macbook for a couple of years now, I love it and could not be with out it. The saying 'once you've had mac, there's no going back' is true. The speed of the macbook is worlds apart from any other laptop I have worked on. When you press the 'on' button, it is on, almost instantly. You can swing between numerous browsers you have open at one time without even needing to click! It is smooth and effortless. The computer comes with many fun and useful programmes, such as, 'photobooth' which can provide hours of entertainment, with the use of the integrated, subtle, webcam, Itunes is pre-installed and iphoto. The desktop is stylishly designed with brilliant clarity of the screen and vibrant colours. The icons are cool and create a beautiful wave motion as you roll the mouse across it - its almost addictive. Even after plenty of use over the past 2 years, my macbooks battery life is long-lasting. I can do a full days work without any worries. And there is a useful toolbar at the top of screen that informs you of exactly how much time you have left in charge, for if you were to worry. One very minor issue I did find with my macbook initially, was the keyboard is American, therefore the @ symbol is located differently. This took a little bit of getting used to. Another rare benefit of owning any apple computer, is that if you were to have any problems with it (of no fault of your own) they will be fixed and re-booted, free of charge at most apple stores. This could save you a fortune in the long run!

Make the change from PC to mac!

I love my macbook in a way I never imagined I would. It shouldn't be a hard transition from a pc to a laptop, but it was. Only because people put me off....telling me that macs aren't the same, that the software isn't compatible and 101 other reasons why I shouldn't get a mac. Thankfully I ignored them and got this macbook. Oh boy it is different to a PC, and it does take some getting used too. Basically if you've used pc's your whole life you need to stop thinking like a pc and start thinking logically because honestly macs work like you'd expect something to work - if you don't know how to do something on it, just try the obvious and usually it's right. I'm not going to lie, re-learning the rules according to the Mac can be frustrating occasionally but when you realise just how simple things can be you'll get over it. The macbook is white which just makes it that little bit different from your normal 'standard' laptop. It's only a subtle difference but enough to make it stand apart. It's nicely sized (not too big) and the track pad is responsive and easy to work. Battery life is phenomenal in my opinion. When your mac book is new you can get about 7-8 hours charge, even after two years it's still giving me 5 1/2 -6 hours on a full charge and this macbook is used every day for hours at a time - so it's not because it's still 'like new'. I was also surprised about how quick the macbook is to switch on and switch off, no waiting around for it to whir into action, it's almost instantaneous! In addition I find the memory is ample for most people's needs. I have a massive music collection and it stores it with loads of room left over. Whilst I'm on the subject of music obviously itunes is already loaded onto the macbook and it makes using any apple product you might have simple. The operating system makes this a breeze to use and I notice that Windows 7 looks suspiciously similar - because even microsoft have to realise that they aren't always right and that maybe Apple have a few good ideas. So it's true to say that I think the Macbook is an amazing machine and if you are not sure about making the move to a mac, well just do it and don't let anyone else put you off! (and by the way, I don't think that i've found any software that isn't compatible with a Mac!). I love my mac and if you make the change you'll feel the same about yours!

Great Product wich will serve you forever...

Apple MacBook is the one of the best decision I have have ever made. People were saying that apple products are very expensive but they are good quality. I personally was tired with viruses I was getting on my PC's perviously and I took decision to save money and get MacBook! Anyone I would ask was recommending Apple product and they were very happy with their gadgets from Apple, promising that I will never go back with PC after Mac. So, I decided that it's worth trying... So, I bought it. There is something about Apple products: you use then and use them and never get tired with your Apple gadgets. With PC for example, you enjoy your PC laptop when you just receive it and after a while it become boring and might cause some problems due to viruses risk. Overall: I love my MacBook for simplicity, flexibility, great design, long life battery! And, for Apple support. A few months ago, I had two problems: my underneath cover got overheated and my screen had a few cracks. I have very disappointed. However, my partner advised me to go to Apple Genius Bar. I got my underneath cover and screen replaced FREE OF CHARGE! and, I was grateful!I have to notice here, that I did not take Apple insurance, so I got things done without any additional insurance purchasing. Thanks to Apple for their excellent customer care and great products. Now, I take care of my MacBook and so far I had no problems with it. I own it for 3 years already and I know people who have MacBooks for 10+ years.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Overall, a very nice laptop to use with some amazing features.

My Macbook is nearly 4 years old now which is virtually miraculous for me since the previous laptops I've used have lasted barely 2 years before all sorts of problems occurred... I remember various friends persuading me to convert to macs at the beginning - this I was extremely hesitant about given that the cost of one of these lovely things could buy me 3 pretty decent netbooks for example... but I gave in and really don't have many complaints. I'm using the macbook to type this review on and all the keys still remain perfectly intact - no keys have ever come off. But please note that the keyboard is 'fixed in' so it isn't easy to clean it out whenever you want to. It types very smoothly and despite previous keyboards showing wear, this one remains in the same condition as when I got it. One of the things I loved about the macbook was the scroll gestures which soon become very intuitive, despite being different to other computers and laptops. The mouse works very smoothly and has never caused me any problems. But...the plastic casing (same piece as the keyboard) has... this is a persistant problem amongst macbooks and one that Apple itself acknowledges - the plastic is extremely prone to hairline cracks especially where the hands rest next to the keyboard. People who have taken extreme care over their laptops have had this problem and I have heard cases where Macstores will replace this casing without any quibbles. My laptop also has hairline cracks underneath, but these aren't covered by their guarantee or by AppleCare which I will mention more about later. The screen of my macbook has all the pixels intact - I have never had any problems with the screen. I've noticed with previous laptops that after less than 2 years, the screens often suffer problems e.g. brightness. The laptop also runs without much noise either. I really, really appreciate the magnetic cord which pulls off when hooked. This has avoided many potential disasters in the past few years. On a very superficial note, I absolutely love the sleek design of the laptop. The white casing probably ages less elegantly than black, but it is still a beautiful piece of work! The battery however has caused me quite a few problems. With apple laptops, their batteries only run a set amount of cycles (charge and discharge), after which the battery will be unable to hold its charge effectively and you'll be forced to either (a) buy a new battery (b) (like me) just plug the laptop in directly from the mains (I've taken the battery out for this - if I pull the cord out by accident well... *lights out* :( ) It is worth mentioning that this is the second battery that I've had. The first one completely failed on me within a year and held zero charge - basically it was a dead brick. Despite getting persuaded by the nice man in the AppleStore to buy Applecare, this did not cover the battery at all. Eventually Apple realised that the battery was faulty, but it did open my eyes to how bad the customer service could be. I use my laptop everyday for several hours and my battery lasted me 2 years. I'm still deciding whether to purchase a battery or not! Overall, I would say that this laptop is extremely robust and will last more than 3 years if used with care :) I have not purchased any apple products since my ipod and this laptop since the price does exceed that of other competing products. For those that have never used the Mac operating system, I would say that there is only a small learning curve. After a short period of time, it becomes very intuitive and extremely comfortable to use. I find myself being able to use Mac and Windows operating systems interchangeably without any hassle or confusion. I have heard some horror stories about the customer service at Apple and have seen for myself as well, but despite this, my next laptop/computer would probably be a Mac due to how impressed I've been overall with it - this is despite having to save up for a loooooong time! I'd probably give it 4 stars, since despite the flaws that may sound quite annoying/severe it is still operating the same as when I first bought it overall!

Best laptop ive had - definalty be sticking with apple.

I bought my first macbook (this one!) about a year ago. Mostly because they just looked and seemed better, and my old pc gave up on me. But now i have one - i would never go back to using a PC. I find this Macbook so reliable, load up time and general actions are quicker, every things easy to access - and things like imovie and garage band come as standard and are really decent programs. Considering that i'd never even used any apple based computing system before - i found it so easy to pick up and didn't face any problems! Had one issue with it - the track pad went a bit funny, and i was unable to use it, but because it was within the year - they fixed it for me and sent it back no problem within 10 days. I literally wouldn't know what to do without it! Its like an extension of my body now!

Would recommend to anyone looking to buy an apple laptop but doesn't want to spend more than £1000

Bought my apple macbook at the start of 2011...and have to say I do not know what I did without it! It's fast, has built in camera, and loads of other applications such as GarageBand which my daughter loves, iMovie to watch dvds or downloadable shows and films on to. It does everything I could have asked for, and as I have an apple iphone 4.0 it was easier for me to combine everything and have all my itunes in one place. It was the cheapest apple macbook so as a student at the time it was an ideal buy for me to bring to Uni to do my assignments and check things online using wifi. I would definitely recommend it to any buyers out there who are keen on apple and want a product with longevity as it is lightweight, doesn't over heat and has a long battery life.

Fantastic laptop, would recommend to anyone

Why and Where: Right so I'll admit, I wanted this macbook for little else than the pretty whiteness of it all at first. Plus the fact that I was incredibly impressed by my iPhone, the ease of use, the apps etc. So when my 18th birthday rolled around I knew exactly what to ask for. Due to the price I had to chip in a little (fair I suppose!), and my dad ordered it off the Apple website itself. As I am in university he got the education pricing which I think is around a 5% discount, every little helps! I got an extra 2 GB of ram boosting it up to 4 GB and also got Microsoft Office for Mac preinstalled. It took around 2 weeks to arrive as it had to be shipped from America. All together, it cost around £850. Advantages: As soon as i turned it on, I was impressed. It starts up very quickly in comparison to my old Windows laptop. The appearance of the macbook is lovely, it is made of a thick, good quality shiny white plastic, which makes it look sleek and very unique to Apple. The screen is lovely and bright and gives an amazing clear picture. I got the smallest screen available, 13 inches, but I think this is pleanty big enough, the screen doesnt look cramped or too small. I dont think I would bother spending more money on the larger version, this is just fine. It took me some time at first to get used to the different controls but as soon as I did it was like second nature. I found the macbook incredibly easy to use, and it was very fun exploring it. I went on the App store and there are such as vast amount of fun and useful apps avaliable, something for everything I could think of. The apps that come with it preinstalled I find very useful. I use iCal to organise my diary and to keep track of my uni timetable which can be all over the place at times. iTunes is tried and tested and just a brilliant piece of software. Safari is a very good, quick, and reliable web browser, I much prefer it to IE personally. My macbook comes with 250GB of memory. This is a LOT for the average user! I have over 3000 songs on my itunes and this has barely made a dent in my memory. I do download a lot of films and tv programs and I also have lots of photos, so I store these on an external hard drive. This is simply to ensure that my mac doesnt get clogged up and so I can keep them all nice and organised. You will be able to fit a lotttt of things on your laptop which this amount of memory, and if you require more you can request it when you order your new one. Battery life on this macbook is excellent. If I am doing basic things such as word processing then the battery can last over 4 hours. Obviously if you are doing more energy intensive things such as listening to music, watching videos or downloading a lot then the battery will not last as long. Charging is easy and fast, and the charger attatches to the laptop via a little magnetic strip which I think is a nice touch. Sound quality is really good through the speakers and much better than my old laptop. One thing that is fab with apple is their customer care. Any troubles with your macbook you can just take it along to any apple store and someone on their Genius Bar will be sure to help you. You can also buy fairly inexpensive customer support when you buy your laptop. Disadvantages: One thing I have heard a few people mention is that after a while the white plastic on their macbook goes a bit yellow or splits. Personally I have not experienced this at all and I have had mine for over a year now. One other thing is the price. It is very pricey! You can probably get a normal laptop with similar memory etc. for a lot cheaper, but it will not have the quirky features and ease of use that a macbook has. It probably will not be as good quality either! One thing that may bother people who like to upgrade their computers, is that you cannot open up the macbook to insert extra ram or a new battery for example. If you want this done, you will have to take it to an Apple store or to the manufacturers for them to do it for you. One thing I have found with my mac is that a normal usb mouse will not function with your macbook properly, I have always found there is a bit of lag. So if you want a seperate mouse rather than just the touchpad youd have to splash out on a proper Apple one. Verdict: I absolutely love my mac and definitely think it was worth the price. It looks good, it works perfectly, and there are just so many things you can do on it. Now with the introduction of the cloud, it is so easy to link my mac and my iphone. One thing to note, they no longer sell these white apple macs on the apple website! Many secondary retailers will probably have them in stock, and they probably will instore as well. but if you want this specific model from now on you may have difficulty!

Overall, a great buy if you dont mind spending the extra bucks.

I initially was under the impression that a Mac is just all about good looks. This was off course before I actually started using it. That's when I realized the Macbook is like a good looking girlfriend with a good heart. Marriage material really. As I am typing this review on my Macbook the fist thing that highlights my mind is the beautiful keyboard. The keys are really smooth and this is really one of its biggest beauties. And now for the GUI. What a beauty? Working on a Mac is really 3 times faster than working on a PC. Steve Jobs was a die hard GUI lover and this shows in the product. The LCD screen is like a bikini on a well shaped body (GUI). I could go on and on on the features but will cover only my top likes in this review. As for the cons, one can argue price is a barrier but for me it was worth the money. Yes it does hurt when I have to pay for spare parts.

        An excellent product overall.

I bought this laptop after having two windows laptops that broke within a year. I used a friends macbook on a few occasions and decided to give it a try - anything had to be better than my previous laptops. I've had mine for about 6 months now and I absolutely love it - I will never buy another windows laptop again! It's so fast and easy to use, plus the app store is an awesome idea. It is quite expensive in comparison with other brands, however I believe that it is worth every penny. Even the design is so much more beautiful than any non-mac I've seen, the glossy finish, smooth curves and simple but sleek design make this laptop absolutely gorgeous. The user interface is also beautifully designed and so easy to use compared to other laptops. Everything is easier on a mac, I would recommend it to anyone.

          Very good purchase

I purchased my Macbook at the beginning of my student life in 2008. And it has followed my journey ever since. It is a beautiful piece of equipment, which offers durability and reliability. I at first was skeptical about whether I should transfer to Apple, but boy do I love it. The Macbook is very simple to use, the trackpad is very sensitive but I consider it faster than a mouse. The Keyboard is very easy to use, in comparison to other laptops that I have used. They're sensitive as well, but if you are to try a Mac keyboard; you'll understand why. I think that the selling point for the Macbook is its portability. Many a time have I been able to just take my laptop into my class, without worrying about the battery supply or the size of the laptop. Unlike other laptops, the Macbook is quiet and efficient. You can type and no one will hear your processors whirring and spinning. It is very useful in lectures for example. The battery life is simply brilliant, with the adjustable brightness, you can keep this laptop going on for quite some time. Of course, after a lot of use, the battery starts to die; so I bought a new one. The only issues I really had with my Macbook was the fact that you needed to buy a lot of software to get anything done. However, it is fortunate nowadays that Apple offer the Mac App Store so you can just buy software online. One vital thing that you needed to fork out some money for, was for Word documents (However, I think this was worth while investment) The other issue is that it ages and becomes quite slow. This is if you don't look after it properly. I rarely switched my laptop off (the reboot time is very quick) and therefore the processor became slow. Often if I have a lot of things running, the laptop becomes loud & annoying and you need to give it a moment to cool off. Playing any sort of video game is a no-go as it just will kill you laptop. Another issue is the price. If possible, try and attempt to get a student discount or another discount as forking out £800 for this is quite a lot. However, I think it's an investment as it has lasted a lot longer than any other of my laptops that I have owned in the past.

This laptop is the best laptop I have ever used, and PC have got nothing on Macbooks!

None of my friends has Macbooks and I had never really been bothered about them, up until they were on special offer at some store and my dad noticed them and said 'Your laptop's broken, right?' I was thinking, what's he trying to say? He asked me if I wanted him to buy me a brand new Macbook, or just get my broken laptop fixed. I chose the obvious choice - Macbook! I really hoped that it was as good as people made out. Most laptops in the world today are black. Which doesn't surprise me as the main colour for all technology is a nice, plain black. The Macbook design is eye catching - very sleek and modern. This laptop is white, and usually I HATE the colour white on electronics because it makes it look like dung, but I actually thought it looked really nice and modern on the Macbook. The touch pad is big and it's all one thing - no visible right or left click buttons. You just press the bottom left or right corner or the touch pad to click. The keys are more spaced out than on the average PC. They're also smaller and thinner, which makes it easier and more comfortable to type, for me. I also like the little clicky sound it makes when I type - it makes me sound professional! Using my Macbook for the first time was the most amazing experience in the world, that I had ever had with any laptop. I turned it on and was so surprised at how little time it took to boot up, which amazed me and also made me very very happy and impressed because I absolutely HATE when a computer takes donkeys years to turn on! The computer isn't at all complicated - there's no Start button, then All Programs and there are all your programs all stuck in there. There's a line along the bottom with all the main programs on the computer and the applications folder - quite straightforward, really! I got my Macbook about 4-5 months ago, and in that time range there wasn't anything about the computer's speed that didn't please me. I didn't experience any random window closing or crashing which I normally have with PC's. I also noticed that I didn't get any viruses or warnings about viruses which was amazing because I detest those horrible little viruses that are spreading around. What disappointed me was that it didn't come loaded with the handy applications such as Microsoft, but that didn't bother me too much as it can be purchased separately at some really good prices. Though, it did come with a nice little program called Text Edit that's basically the same as Notepad/Wordpad and you can write all your work and all on there and save it to your computer. It also came with the music application, iTunes, which I was happy about because when I downloaded iTunes onto my PC it took forever and I hated having to go through all the trouble of doing that. The Macbook comes with all the features we want in a laptop, like a webcam, speakers, bluetooth, microphone, etc. What amazed me about the webcam was that you can take some really good photos with the webcam. There are a lot of PC's which have webcams which are really really rubbish, but the Macbook's webcam is almost crystal clear! With the iMovie application you can record some amazing videos, and the microphone is really good, just like a normal video camera! This laptop is my holy grail, and trust me, I will never, EVER go back to windows as long as I've got my Macbook! 20/07/11 UPDATE: The Apple Macbook MC516B/A has been discontinued as of the 20th of July 2011. When I saw this is was just a disappointment as this is such a good laptop, and it's such a shame to see them go. But I guess Apple need to get rid of some old products to introduce new, better models!

So much better than a PC, but you'd expect it for the price.

This is my first macbook, and I'm glad I chose it over another PC. I haven't had any problems with viruses yet, but those are easy to avoid on a mac as long as you're not downloading any dodgy files. It's also still as speedy as it was when I first got it. The screen is great - I chose the glossy - and I've even used it outside and visibility wasn't too much of a problem. The sound quality is better than other laptops I've had before, and I've watched several films on it - I wondered if the screen would be too small for films, but I think it's perfect. The new touchpad is a bit of a downside for some people, but I find that I prefer it to the traditional touchpad with two separate buttons. It's much more intuitive. The way the power cable connects to the macbook is great. It's 'magsafe', which means it uses magnets, and when I clumsily trip over the cable, instead of pulling the laptop off the table, the cable will just come off the macbook. The battery life is amazing. Of course, if you're doing several things at a time, it will go down faster, but it really can last up to 10 hours. The only downsides are that it scratches quite easily so I'd recommend getting a good cover. I'm also not sure it was worth so much money, but I don't regret buying it (and keep in mind that you get a discount if you're a student and you buy it directly from apple). If you're someone who's going to use it for graphic design or with music software then I'd definitely recommend it.

An amazing investment, would never go back to a PC

I had wanted a Macbook for as long as I could remember, after saving up enough money I urged myself to buy it, hoping that it had lived up to its reputation. Its design is eye catching, and much more sleek than the regular PC. Using my Macbook for the first time was the best experience I have had with any laptop, from the easy navigation and layout to the eye catching applications and design. Since using my Macbook, which was a good 5- 6 months ago, I haven't experienced any form of crashing or random window closing. Also, the speed at which my Macbook turns on and that it opens windows / applications is amazing compared with my previous experiences with PC's. However, it didn't come with applications such as Microsoft installed (which you can buy separately at reasonable prices), but it does come with a nifty little program called Text Edit, that allows you to saw documents on and do work. The applications and graphics on this are great. And comes with all the features you want in a laptop (a decent webcam, bluetooth, speakers etc....) .

Its different to any PC you would have used before, so give it a go!

I bought my MacBook just over a year ago, paying a similar price to those advertised on here and although I thought it would never be worth it (I was just curious to see what the fuss what about!) I can now happily admit that I was wrong. These MacBooks are a totally different experience to your average PC. Even from the shell, the design is sleek and eye catching. Its the small things like how the Apple logo on the front lights up while in use. Since I purchased my MacBook I've used it daily and not once have I experienced a problem with it. It has never crashed or randomly closed any programs or applications. It is always fast in every aspect - from loading iTunes to opening new tabs on Safari. One thing I noticed is that when I first turn it on and the home screen appears, I don't have to wait for it to load up or anything, I can just get started straight away. It is ALWAYS reliable and hasn't let me down (touch wood!). Although applications such as Word etc (I think the package is called iLife) come at an extra cost don't let this put you off. I haven't ever purchased them as it hasn't been necessary. Mac has a similar program called Text Edit which I use instead.. But if iLife is really necessary for you I'm sure it can be purchased on eBay at a reasonable price. The graphics on the MacBook are incredible. I was amazed by the screen savers and wallpapers! Like I said earlier, its the little things! Most downloads nowadays are compatible with Mac, so don't let that put you off. The benefits you get from this device make the price so worth it. As far as specifications are concerned, to name a few my MacBook has a camera, bluetooth, excellent sounds quality and volume from the speakers and wifi to name a few amongst the million other technicalities which go ove my head! I don't use my MacBook to explore everything it has to offer, I mainly use it for surfing the web and listening to music, but it has something for everyone! One negative point however is the battery life. Although I usually have quite a few tabs and applications open at a time, the battery always seems to go down really quick especially when playing music.. But so what, thats why we have a charger! Overall - if the price tag puts you off, think again, you get what you pay for and it is so worth it!

The MacBook uses a graphics processor that economizes space in a whole new way. A traditional computer logic board contains multiple components: the CPU, two chips that control communication throughout the computer, and the graphics processor. The logic board in the MacBook contains only two components: the CPU and a graphics processor with all of the core logic built into a single chip.

Open your MacBook and you're instantly greeted by glorious full screen brightness. Anything you view, including the glossy widescreen display itself, is a spectacular experience. The LED-backlit display is more power efficient. And it's mercury- and arsenic-free, so it's greener than ever.
