Advantages: Build quality, no viruses
Disadvantages: price, OS
I'm not a power user or a serious gamer. I just do the usual browsing, office stuff plus some use Midi gear, USB gadgets GPS, weather station. I'd had an eight year old toshiba laptop with Windows XP. I'd had my fair share of crashes and re-installs over the years. Anyway, it needed replacing because the case was starting to come apart and the screen hinge had broken.
Buying a Mac is like coming out or joining a religion, even buying it in John Lewis , complete strangers were giving me words of encouragement and approving smiles. My Mac-owning friends soon got word and supportive emails flooded in. Surely, I had made the right decision?
The OS-X environment is very clean - no pointless side bars, 30 free trials, security updates virus software & nagging that you get with a new Windows machine. Obviously, things like different control keys, shortcut keys no right clicking, no delete key take a bit of getting used to. I can cope with that.
Most of the bundled software that came with the Mac I don't use. iphoto is too fussy :Windows picture viewer is much more straightforward. itunes is dreadful, the library and playlist management is bad: you're much better off with Winamp or VLC, both free. I use firefox from day one because the add-on Adblock Plus is so effective. I can't comment on Safari. Garage band is good, but if you're already into such things, you're not going to stop using Reason or Ableton live.
Part of my choice was because of the excellent display and well designed keyboard and touch pad. In these respects, it does not disappoint. The scrolling and gesturing on the touchpad is great. Unfortunately for me, it does not work quite as well on Windows - but it's only a matter of time before someone figures it out and distributes it free!
The sound quality is very good, even from the internal speakers.
Some of the hardware spec is distinctly stingey: Only 2 USB ports. A media card slot that only takes SD cards. And bizzarely, one stereo jack that can be used for a mic or headphones.
You'd get much more hardware for your money from say, a mid range Sony VAIO, which always seem nice solid machines. However, if you do this just invest in an OEM Windows 7 disc and do a clean install. Sony are one of the worst offenders for bloating out the hard drive with their appalling software.
In conclusion, I like my Macbook pro, especially running Windows 7. I'm hoping the build quality and hopefully longevity will make this a sound purchase in the long term.
Maybe I'll get my Mac-OS revelation in the end but after 3 months dedicated tinkering: it ain't happened yet!
Summary: well built good looking macbook
