Build Quality - Seriously, Highly recommend to all.

After owning my MacBook for a month I finally feel ready to review it accurately. Let me start off by saying that I was highly reluctant to spend so much money on a laptop. I've always been a Windows guy so I've known that you can buy laptops with equivalent specs to Macs for a good deal cheaper. Though after comparing different laptops I was not able to find one that had a satisfactory build quality. The closest I could find were laptops made by Asus, but even then I read of too many build quality issues that made me uneasy. Ultrabooks made by other companies had good quality, but by then they cost just as much as the MacBook but with lower specs. So I decided to take the plunge with this MacBook after demoing it in a Apple Store.

Here are the things that made me confident with my purchase:

Build Quality - Seriously, you can't beat a unibody construction. While other laptops creak when you pick them up due to the various plastic components screwed together, the Macbook feels firm. The only thing that initially concerned me was that the lid would slightly creak when you closed it. Running waxed dental floss through the hinges solved this.
Trackpad and Keyboard- This extra large trackpad is heavenly to use. Having the whole trackpad function as a giant button is a lot more comfortable to use. Plus two finger clicking as a replacement for the right click button is surprisingly intuitive. The keyboard keys are well spaced and the led backlighting is very cool.
Power System - I regularly get around 6 hours from the battery, which I am more than satisfied with. The magsafe plugin system is more handy than I thought it would be, and there is a neat led battery indicator on the side of the notebook that makes checking the battery level with the computer off easy.
OS X - Mine initially came with Lion, but after upgrading to Mountain Lion I am even more satisfied.

Everything runs fast and animations are fluid. I love the multi touch features, which again is something I initially didn't think I would really need. It took me a little time to get used to using finder after being accustomed to windows explorer, but I am confident now in my ability to navigate through files just as quickly as in Windows.
Dual Booting - I have a few engineering programs that only run on Windows so I decided to install Windows 7 through bootcamp. Because it boots natively from the hard drive, it runs just as smoothly as any other Windows laptop. Remember folks, this computer doesn't have any magical internal components. The Intel Chipset is the same used in any other laptop and thus Windows runs just the same with the proper drivers installed.
Chipset - The Intel Core i5 runs very fast with minimal heat. The Intel Graphics 4000 is more than adequate for most applications.
I could even run Portal 2 on maximum graphics settings and play 1080p video without it breaking a sweat. The fan almost never revs up to an audible level. This is in part to the aluminum body being a giant heat sink. So yes, the laptop body can get warm at times. But it is never uncomfortably warm when I use it on my lap. Ill probably upgrade the RAM and the harddrive to an SSD in the future, but for now they are fine.
So all in all I am very happy with my purchase. I am officially a Mac convert and will use this laptop for a very long time.
Also, all the Windows "gamers" who are trashing Macs need to gain some perspective. Yes, I can get a Core i7 laptop with a dedicated graphics card for a lot cheaper than the MacBook. But I decided to spend the extra money to get a better engineered laptop with some nifty extra features.

A great laptop! I've had a fair few laptops and none of them have ever come close to the apple mac book pro. I've had it for approximately 3 months now and could never go back to a normal one again. It is so quick and and the picture is so clear its great to watch films, videos, youtube clips etc. When i was buying the apple mac book pro i was struggling to hand over £1000+ for a laptop when you can buy one for a few £100 but now having one i would never go back! Just amazing pieces of equipment! Its so easy to use and the layout and features are great! The sound quality from the speakers are fantastic! Super clear and can be turned up loud! The only disadvantage to this product is its price and if your on a budget then this isn't the laptop for you.

Great Laptop takes some getting used to but can be as powerful a tool as you want it to be.

Like everyone i know i jumped on the apple boat a couple of years ago. The laptop looked cool i heard great things about it and i got student discount.

So i went for the Macbook Pro, 13inch as i travel a lot and felt that the smaller frame would be easier to transport. I needed this mainly for the school work so this will be a regular persons review, i'm afraid i am not a computer buff.

Use: So the entire operating system is very different from the windows i grew up with. A lot of the buttons are on the opposite side, but i must say to basically operate this laptop it comes, quite quickly and natural. There are a lot of short cuts that come from movements on the mouse pad, these can get annoying at times, when you just happen to catch the right corner and your screen saver comes on or you lose the work you were working on cus it flies off the screen.

There are times when i think this laptop is too powerful for me, but thats whats great. It is so versatile it is the perfect computer for novices and pros, it can do all the basic functions and also excel if you know how.

Battery: I have had this computer for around 3 years and the battery has never been changed. It still lasts a solid hour and half and is something i have never been concerned about, in short it is quality. I have had to buy a new charger however but that was only recently.

Longevity: Overall this is a class act computer in terms of quality and workability, i have used this computer every single day since i bought it, it has written countless articles and is even writing this review right now. Yes it has slowed up but it still operates at a high level.

I know the price tag for this computer is higher than others, but i have avoided any kind of viruses and if you think that this computer will last twice as long as others, then to me it is worth the doubled price tag.

Overall a great laptop, better than windows. Only small issues that can be worked around with time.

I bought my Macbook Pro when i started University, as on a music course it was an obvious choice. I have to say that the quality of music editing software is exceptional, on occasion it can be slightly expensive but with research i have found cheaper alternatives of similar quality. The processor and amount of RAM in my mac (2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 and 8GB) can handle running multiple applications without a noticeable decrease in performance.
The basics such as the Microsoft package can be quite expensive, but they run super fast and without any problems. If you shop around your bound to find a Mac that comes with them pre-installed, like mine did. If not, there are cheaper and sometimes free alternatives such as Pages and Numbers form the App store.
the battery life is excellent, lasting me at least a day and a half, with Wi-fi always on and safari running as well as other applications open.
i have heard some people complain about lack of compatibility with various products to their Mac, but i have to say I've never had any problems. When i switched from an iPhone to android i was concerned about syncing issues, but when connecting my device, a helpful message popped up telling me about a specific application 'Android File Transfer' which allowed me to sync my phone without any problems.
The screen size of 13" is big enough for me and the quality of images and videos is great. There are various movie applications and converters if you have any trouble playing anything.

On the negative side, for me, the hard drive size of 320GB is a little small so have had to be careful what applications i have installed and buy an external hard drive for some of my external files. That being said, I'm sure it is simple enough to upgrade the size, but might be costly.
i have also noticed that some internet downloaded applications (i.e not from the app store) cause some problems when trying to run, such as freezing and running slowly but this could be down to my preferences i set up.

Overall, i would say it is a great laptop, much better than any windows operated systems in my opinion and people complaining about compatibly issues just haven't looked hard enough for an app to solve it.

As with convention this is a great product but has compatibility limitations

The majority of people would have seen what a mac includes and what its all about, whether through friends or at the Apple store. If you have come this far, its likely you know what most of the features of an Apple Mac are about.

With that in mind, I'm going to speak about a much less talked about issue. Software and hardware compatibility. Despite the large amount of users of Apple Macs and the fact that it is increasingly on the up, it amazes me that software and hardware is not being made to be compatabile with the Apple Mac. At the same time it amazes me Apple have not engineered and designed the Macs to be compatible with technology which is by and large designed for Windows. For instance I tried to download parent protection recently but annoyingly could not find any reasonable priced packages that were compatible with Macs.

For that reason I am rating this product low, despite it actually being very good.

IF working properly, it's a wonderful and user friendly laptop

Maybe I should have known when I paid nearly £1,000 for a laptop that no laptop however much I paid for it could be a reliable and smooth running as the marketing and hype that surrounds Apple would have me think. For the first 18 months, the laptop however worked perfectly, with a battery charge of up 12 hours I could easily go all day in University without even needing to bring my charger, two years in though and this has rapidly fallen to two hours and I have had to take it back twice for extensive repairs including new logic board, optical drive and trackpads, such have been the problems with me device. Taking out the £49 AppleCare package for a three year warranty has saved me probably £800 in repair bills as Apple seem to have found a way to even over charge that. Now I have it back after the recent round of repairs, it is back to working well and I am glad to have the computer power and also usability that comes with a mac. It is undeniable that the trackpad is both an elegant and user friendly aspect of the laptop and allows the user to do far more with their time purely by increasing the ease at which one can scroll a page.
I don't tend to use my macbook for high end gaming, but the processor is still quick and the graphics sharp, even though I don't have the retina screen.

All in all, if you take my problems aside it is a phenomenal laptop, and perhaps I was just unlucky with the issues I have had. The staff have been polite and helpful with every repair though and if you have an ipad or iphone and wish to add to the Apple Collection, a 13" MAcbook Pro is a great laptop to pick.

        i love apple products

I purchased this laptop in August 2013 after my original Black MacBook (2007 model) broke down after having it for 5 years which is pretty good by todays standards.

I decided to purchase the 15 inch screen this time as opposed to the 13 inch and I am really pleased with it. It's great with disc drive compatibility so you can watch DVD movies on it and the screen is a fantastic size to do so. It is extremely fast and you can do pretty much anything on it. I would recommend it to anyone.. I think it's worth it to shell out the money- they are simply the best thing on the market in the way of laptops!

I use it every day and I think it is an absolutely brilliant machine. It is silver and sleek, looks good and is extremely fast. Also it is great for watching things on YouTube.. flows really flawless..

Nothing bad at all to say!

        Great purchase!

I had an old, white MacBook that I got when I first started college and it was to the point where it only worked when plugged in...I tried replacing the battery, but it just would not work. Finally, I made the decision to upgrade to this model and I LOVE my new Mac. The programs work seamlessly, unlike the slow load time on my old one. Also, this size is perfect for me. There was a larger option (I think 15 inches), but I like this because it is easy to carry around. I go to Starbucks or work on my back patio a lot. The battery life is excellent, I can go four or five hours in one charge. Really, I haven't had any complaints at all yet and I'd make the same decision again! My only advice is to make sure you buy the insurance (made that mistake on my last one).

Fantastic laptop for anyone willing to spend money for it!

For most of my life I was stuck with using a PC, eventually I was able to upgrade to a MacBook and from there I upgraded to this awesome piece of kit. The specs this computer uses are perhaps not as high as other computers of the same price but Apple's operating system utilises these specs fantastically to provide an extremely smooth experience. The screen (as with the majority of Apple products) is of an extremely high quality and looking at the screen for hours will be easy for anyone who uses their computer for work etc will find it to be a very pleasurable experience. The laptop comes loaded with OSX Lion which includes two major pieces of software pre loaded (iTunes and iPhoto) making listening to your music extremely simple and easy. Tweaking photos also becomes easy though the use of iPhot which is a simple but powerful photo editing program. Surfing the web is also made easy with safari and the trackpad on the laptop makes the experience even more intuitive with the use of the gesture system, allowing you to zoom with a pinch of your fingers.

Overall I would recommend these laptop to anyone who wants their computer life to be a whole lot simpler and there is no better way to achieve this than with a MacBook

          Love it.

Now I'm you're average Joe when it comes to computers. PC's were all I'd ever known, and until now was of the opinion that Apple products in general were over priced and under deliver. Oh, but how could I have been so very wrong? My knight in silver matte finish armor swooned in and saved the day as my previous laptop sadly left this world as a result of a dodgy power port.

You know, I don't really approve of finding love online after previously ending up with a load of tosh and hearing of other peoples bad experiences. However, I'd fallen for the hype and what with the nearest Apple store being around fifty miles away I didn't have much choice this time, so I thought I'd give it a go. I was baffled with technical Jargon from the start, each MacBook promising more than the last; 2.5 GHz dual - core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz, 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive, Intel HD Graphics 4000... What even is that? Does anybody know? I for one feel incredibly dumb just looking for it. Seven hours of Built in battery sounds good (I think?). I guess the experts would say this was too good for me, but for £999 it was mine, all mine.

I was nervous at first. With next to no mac experience, the thought of relying on it was daunting to say the least, but it was love at first sight. The clerical, matte cardboard (yet sturdy looking), white box that arrived on my doorstep a few days later, sent me giddy with excitement. Inside had my macbook been lovingly stowed away, the foam upper layer protecting it from any harm it could have encountered on its journey. Also inside were the accessories and a handy little manual, explaining how to use the thing, which was later to become my bible.

Everything about it was so sleek, so well designed. Its like the folks at Apple had thought of everything. The immaculately flat keys making for a luxuriously smooth typing experience. A MagSafe power port, which holds the power adapter safely in place should it be knocked or pulled out. There's even a button to press to check your battery status without turning anything on. And if none of that appeals to you, then I will tell you that the light up apple logo makes even me want to sit in the window in StarBucks like one of the cool kids. And I don't even like Coffee.

All of that makes me sound like a very shallow Mac user. Maybe I am. But I believe we have a connection on a higher level. There's no need for for a generic laptop mousepad relationship between us. All I have to do is move the mouse where I want to go and press down, and as if its read my mind as it takes me there, faster than I have ever been before. I remember the first day we met, we spent hours together flicking back and forth between web pages, making them dance with the tracker pad, or spidermaning three fingers and watching the dashboard zoom in and out. But hey, its the little things in life.

Sadly, its not all fun and games. Some times we fall out. Not so much now, but in the beginning (the dark days), it was hard to figure out the most basic of functions, which sent me into spirals of rage. Safari for instance took some getting used to, and to this day, I'm still learning more about my MacBook. As it turns out, the Apple icon on the top left hand side of the screen is actually a button, and is really quite useful. Everything after that is easily Google-able. I blame it on my lack of experience. There is also the fact that most Printers aren't compatible with Macs, so the chances are you'd have to buy a new one. But now I'm just being picky.

Despite this, I can safely say my Macbook and I are very happy together, and I hope to share many more years together. And well, if laptop's were husbands then I guess I've found Mr MacRight. As cheesy as its sounds, its true, and something only a handful are lucky enough to have. For that reason I'd highly recommend taking the plunge and buying one, I for one could never go back to a PC after the magic that is My Macbook Pro.

At the start it is difficult to get used to, as it is very different to the windows set up, however the speed and software on the product is magnificent. One of the only downfalls to this product is that it doesn't come with Microsoft Word etc or any type of equivalent, although there is a microsoft mac software which is around £75.00.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Great laptop that would recommend to anyone who is confident with a change of computer/laptop/PC and

After years of saving and pleading the parents, I finally received my MacBook Pro which I bought out of some prize winnings a few months ago.

I have been extremely pleased with my MacBook which I received a few months ago. The box I received the Mac in was neat and taken care of well in it's self. From the moment of opening, you see the Mac in it's plastic coverings and padded well by the black foam stuck to the top of the box. The box is laid out well with different compartments for each content. The box included the MacBook Pro it's self, Apple stickers, cleaning cloth, Quick Start Guide and product guide. The charger/power cable for the Mac came in a separate compartment in the box but neatly wrapped and folded. On the note of the charger, it is rather short however within the same compartment is an extension lead to give extra length to the charger. This is very handy extra for people of whom have desks or awkward power sockets.

Right from when you hit the 'on' button on the Mac you get a proud Apple logo followed by a short start tone (of which I am greeted by whenever I turn on the Mac) and the welcome video played gives a real welcome from Apple themselves.

The set up is fairly easy, an apple ID is optional however I used it to allow syncing with my iPad Mini a lot easier. The Mac more or less sets it self up and gives you full use of the OS straight away.

Before the Mac I was a Windows user on my Toshiba laptop but the switch was pretty easy. However having cousins that own an iMac I did know the works of the OS. The switch should be easy enough for skilled users but would not recommend it for older users of whom have had a long time using Windows. There are a few things like the CTRL key on a Mac is now a CMD key but I got used to this fairly quickly. There is still a CTRL key which is used for simple things like word check online etc.

The model it's self is slick and beautiful. The Apple logo on the back of the screen lights up when the Mac is on and can be dimmed as the main screen is dimmed. The keyboard has it's own back light which can also be dimmed using keys placed to the right of the screen dimmers. The mouse pad has finger sensitivity all over the pad (Yes, even on the clicker!) and instead of a left and right key there is only left which is spread across the bottom of the pad.

The disc drive (which is only available on MacBook Pro's without Retina Display) is easy and simple. You can simply slip the disc into the drive and it just sucks it in. The eject button is placed just in the top right corner of the keyboard which is easy and accessible. The USB ports or easy and accessible and the charger input is great. Placing the end of the cable right next to the input will allow it to magnetically attach it to the computer. This is helpful as it is harder to pull out by accident but easy to pull out on purpose.

Overall, the MacBook Pro is an amazing laptop which I would recommend to anyone who is confident with a change of computer/laptop/PC and is happy with a new keyboard layout.

great laptop, you will not be dissapointed!

First of all I would like to say that this is the first Apple Laptop I have owned and after years of using Windows laptops I don't think I will ever go back to anything else :) I have owned this machine for around 5 months now, so in my opinion enough time has passed for me to write an adequate review.

            >>Appearance<<
There is no doubt that the MacBook Pro series looks visually stunning. From the chrome finish, to the backlit keyboard (which is extremely useful when trying to type in the dark bedroom) everything just 'flows' with this laptop. The 13.3" screen is big enough to enjoy all your movies, e-mails and web browsing on. Before owning my MacBook I had previously been using an 17" PC laptop and I did have some reservations buying the smaller size as I thought it would get in the way of my viewing experience. However I quickly became adjusted to the smaller size, not even noticing it now.

            >>Specs<<
After doing a little research I have found that you can get similar PC/Laptops from other companies with the same sized hardrives and RAM for a lower price. So why would you spend more money for an Apple laptop?

I think firstly, higher end Apple products have a great track record of lasting for some time. I have known people who have had theirs for almost 5 years and are still satisfied with it. You might not have the latest spec or high resolution, however you have a laptop which you can rely on time after time.

In addition, if you already own other Apple products (such as the iPad or iPhone etc.) you will find that they will seamlessly work with each other, something which I always found a little more difficult with my PC.

You might however find that by owning an Apple product you will want to go and 'catch them all' and purchase an iPad or an Apple TV because they work so very well together :)

I think it's important to note that MacBook Pros have a great re-sell value. You won't get what you paid for it sure but many sell for about 50-70% of the RRP, much higher than you would get for a same spec PC.

The battery life on mine is around 4 hours if not charging, this is a lot less than the 7 hours promised by Apple but still a lot higher than I have ever had on a PC Laptop. This to me might be my only real criticism with the laptop.

I believe I cannot watch Blu-Ray discs directly with the disc drive installed however a quick Google search reveals that there are ways around this, by purchasing an external Blu-Ray disc drive. It does however come with an inbuilt SD card reader, which is excellent for transferring photos from your digital camers.
Other features include the 2 UBS3 ports, a headphone jack, Firewire port and a Thunderbolt port for which you'll need an external wire to make use of.

            >>Usability<<

Having only ever used Macs here and there, I found getting used to the controls of a Mac quite tricky.
The different command keys on the Mac had me confused for some time, however once you sit down with the machine for a few days, you do start to get used to it.

I wouldn't therefore say that this is a machine that you can just pick up and go. It will definitely take you a few days if you are not used to Macs.

However I find the toolbar in Macs a joy to work with. Not only does this free up your desktop space (which means you can actually SEE the wallpaper you have decided to use) but it is easy to control what programs you want close by and which you don't.

I particularly love the keyboard functions at the very top. You have ones which allow you to brighten or dim the screen. Another quickly opens up all the applications you are using, giving you an insight and allowing you to work faster as you don't have to keep switching from one window to the other.
You also have full volume controls, great for when you quickly want to turn something down or even mute (essential for the library!) and your music start/pause, forward/backword commands.

            >> Final Words <<

To summaries this laptop is the best investment I have made in a very long time, yes it is pricey but you will not have to buy another laptop for years. I highly recommend getting a 13" if you are looking to travel/use it for work and you will only really need a bigger screen if you are working on picture projects (such as Adobe Photoshop) as you might need the extra display space.

            Mac

The laptop that I write my reviews on and the one I am typing away on now is a MacBook. When I first met my husband all I had ever used was a PC and I was unfamiliar with Apple's but now after using them for about eight years I would never go back to a PC or another type of laptop computer. This one is the best by far and I love it. I am not too techie and so am not able to really tell you about processing capabilities and things like that. What I can tell you about this laptop is how it works and how I enjoy using it and what it does from a more neutral point of view. That is how I would like to read a review about a computer.
The laptop we have is a MacBook Pro and we have had this particular model now for about three years. I think it cost us in the £1,000 region which yes, is pricey but then you do get what you pay for. We've been looking into replacing it should the need come and if you look at these deals that offer you a cheap laptop but the time you add on all the extras and functions that the Mac has as standard, like firewalls and programmes that you need etc, its almost the same price so I would always recommend a Mac.

Firstly what I like about this Mac is that its quite sleek and stylish looking. It is a silver laptop and when you close the cover it folds down and closes with the help of a magnetic shut so there are not clasps or buttons to worry about. The laptop is fairly thin, I would say its less than an inch when closed and so this makes it quite light when you want to carry it around. In order to store it we want it out of the way of the kids so we actually can put it in a thin little draw we have in our lounge coffee table, its that thin. The screen portion is the thinnest part of the laptop.

In order to turn the laptop on there is a little button you press on the top right hand side and then it takes a minute or two to warm up. With this Mac you can set up passwords if you like when you get to the welcome screen and then once you log onto this all your icons are on the bottom of the screen. We've put a family photo on the front screen which pops up when you open and turn on the laptop. The screen is 13 inches which I think is fairly big. The screen is really crisp and the clarity is great.

The keys are black and are in the form of a proper Querty keyboard so its very easy to type on this machine. The keys are a little bit raised up from the bottom of the laptop and all individually spaced so you never really press others if you have quite wide fingers. The only problem with this though is that if you eat food over your laptop (I know, I really shouldn't) crumbs get inbetween the keys and in order to clean it you just need to blow them away to make sure they don't drop down the cracks. The mouse took some getting used to. Well, I say mouse but there actually isn't a mouse with this computer, there is just a touch pad in front of you that you just need to press with your fingers in order to move the cursor. The touch pad is nice and smooth though and once you get the hang of it its much nicer than having wires and a bulky mouse. It did take some coordination in order to press and move at the same time but I find if you press with your index finger and then drag with your middle finger this works the best. There is no right click on this pad like there is on a regular computer so you just click normally.

We have a camera in our laptop so that enables us to Facetime and talk to people over the internet which is great. The camera is located at the top of the screen and you will know it is on when you see a little green light. The camera is quite good quality and you get a good picture when you are talking to someone. It's easy to find the Facebook icon which you can add to your home screen and then all you need to do is press on this when you want to activate Facetime.

What I love about this laptop is the speed, practically anything you do on it, from searching on the internet to word processing it is amazingly quick and responds in an instant to anything you tell it to do. I like that about it as I'm quite an impatient person so I hate to wait for anything, especially things like internet pages to load.
We've never had any problems with this specific laptop but we did with our previous Mac and so its great to know that you can take it into an Apple store and they will look at it there and then for you and can usually solve the problem straight away.

In order to charge this computer we have a lead that plugs in magnetically onto the left hand side of the computer. It will have a little red light when it is still charging and when it is fully charged a little green light will come onto the charger. When we first bought this laptop the charge lasted for hours but now tis three years old it will probably only hold its charge for about an hour and a half/two hours so I usually just keep it plugged in charging all the time whilst I am using it. When the power begins to get low the laptop will actually tell you that you are running on backup power and that you need to plug it in soon.
When we decide to get another laptop I know we will stick with the MacBook Pro as its been a really reliable, good working laptop.

              Disadvantages

I'd be lost without mine, a student must have.

I bought a MacBook Pro due mainly to the fact students in the UK receive a pretty big discount on Apple computers and I needed a new, more portable, faster laptop.
I definitely made the right decision to purchase a MacBook Pro. In comparison to a standard PC, the operating system provided by Apple is much faster and streamlined and I have had no issues or 'bugs' to date.
I bought the 13-inch model because I needed a computer that was easily portable.. The only problem with it now is that since everyone seems to want bigger laptops, I struggle to find nice cases and bags for it.
Aesthetically, the MacBook is very pleasing. It's predominantly silver with a black border around the screen. I rarely suffer from glare on the screen although the laptop itself does get fingerprinted easily and often which is a pain to get off.
The built in camera is superb and I love the backlight on the keyboard.
The speakers are below the keyboard which is strange and there don't appear to be vents so sometimes the base gets very hot.
The screen, although small, is still fantastic for watching HD films and streaming TV on.
Battery life is beyond anything I ever had on a non-apple laptop, it has no problem lasting a good 4 hours being used for music, internet access and word processing at the same time.
