One of the older Compaq laptops, does it still have a purpose? Coming from a person who is very techy and loves messing with old technology for new purposes, yes.
The Compaq Armada has the potential to be used for many things, I have built 2 digital photo frames with these doorstops. The end result comes out as a beautiful, untouched, completely superb fast and awesome wifi digital photo frame.
How did I do it? First you will want to load a operating system, preferably linux, Ubuntu Linux was my choice and it worked flawlessly. Completely gut the laptop for the screen, motherboard. Pick up a frame, you will have to modify it yourself to make ends fit. Once you have the motherboard set in where you want it and the screen, make sure to drill any holes necessary for the AC adapter and any other features you would like. The laptop can be controlled via Logmein or any third party software you would like to connect to your digital photo frame. Install a third party flickr program to automatically post pictures to your digital photo frame. Whalaa, you have a sleep wooden, 14" digital photo frame which would have cost more than $200.
On the other hand, these laptops are bit out dated. You will still be able to use them, but switching from a newer machine to use a old Armada will frustrate things a lot. For instance the laptop, does not have a touch pad. Nor does it include wifi, what do you expect?!
Would I recommend this laptop? Not really, only if you want a cheap linux machine or have the skills and knowledge to modify/hack it for fun.
My rating applies to this new era of technology, and what the laptop should be rated today. Hope you understand. If you have any cool ideas with the Armadas, I have plenty sitting next to me, shoot me a email!
