Compaq Presario CQ71-402SA
Disadvantages: No Webcam
While I was studying in the States my netbook broke down after six months of use. I wasn't able to get it repaired and I had four essays to write in two weeks! Safe to say I needed something quick, reliable and reasonably priced.
To be honest when I went to Best Buy I bought this as it was the cheapest they offered, in Pounds Sterling it worked out to be just over 200 given the exchange rate at the time but DooYoo is thinking that it's around 427GBP. Either way for the price you're certainly getting a good deal.
The basics of the laptop are the following:
320 GB Harddrive
Large keypad and screen
Preinstalled software components
3 USB slots
Naturally with buying this laptop in the States I was worried about a few things, whether my region 2 DVD's would work with a region 1 DVD player and the plug settings as US and UK plugs are different. Thankfully I didn't have to worry, there was an option on the DVD Player that allowed me to change the region settings quite easily and after getting a US/UK power adapter I am able to run it from the mains no problem.
What impressed me most though about this laptop was the sleek design of Windows 7. It is much more user friendly than other operating systems to the point where I wrote a review on it sometime last month (so I won't repeat myself here).
Good points about the laptop though are the generously large keyboard - it's very much similar to the PC style keyboard. The screen is a very good size but it does get dusty and marked easily so you may need to invest in some computer cleaning products. I also like how a lot of programmes were already installed, including things like Skype and trial version of Microsoft Office.
It's also a laptop that's easy to get online with. There's a button next to the on switch that controls wireless devices, when it's blue you can connect to wireless, when it's red you can't, you simply push it on and off like the button next to it.
There's also plenty of space on this laptop, I have numerous photos, documents and video files stored on it and am not even half full! The files also open fairly quickly as well so you're not waiting around forever for it to load and it's the same for the programmes themselves, they load very quickly and you can run several applications at once with ease.
The only downside to this laptop is that it doesn't come with a built in webcam like most newer laptops so it has to be bought seperately if you use one. Also with my version being from the US it has an American keyboard so I'm not sure how to switch it to the UK version so I can get my pound sign back! The battery life is also of fair quality, I'm not sure how great as I always run it from the mains but I think you do get a few hours of life from it but it's always best to take the charger with you just in case of an emergency.
Overall, this computer has yet to let me down, I'm still saving for a Macbook but until that day comes I'm very happy with my Compaq.
It should be available in most good electrical retailers or online but if you're looking for a cheap laptop then this is the way to go!
Summary: Great for a student
