Dell Inspiron 15R
Advantages: Speedy, Great Screen, Easy To Use, Attractive.
Disadvantages: Short Battery Life.
I previously had a Samsung Netbook which was absolute rubbish, to add my mum had the same and hers was also rubbish. It was slow, kept freezing and just a nightmare to use. So it got to the point where I just gave up and decided to go and buy a brand new Laptop from PC World. It was quite a spur of the moment thing. On hindsight I should have done more research as the customer service in my PC world is pretty lack lustre. But I had an idea of what I wanted.
My request was specifically for a Dell laptop. Why? Purely through recommendation. (Word of mouth is the best marketing tool!). My boyfriend has a Dell Laptop and has had it for several years now. It works like a dream and is connected to the internet in seconds. While using my old netbook, it was only just starting up and my boyfriend was already checking his emails on his Dell!
Other than being particular on this occasion about the brand, I wanted a good looking laptop that would work fast and be great for the internet. A decent battery life and preferably a web cam. I don't think this was too much to ask, and there are so many laptops around that I knew I would find one to fit my simple needs.
I chose Dell as I said before, because of seeing how good my boyfriend's laptop works. I also know of Dell through their advertising and their website and I felt secure choosing a brand known for its computer technology. I guess the saying about Jack of all trades and master of none is true for makers of technology as well.
** Setting Up**
I hate Setting up new technology. I am far too impatient and I just want to get up and running. So I was happy that this laptop was literally plug in and go. It was all self-done to be honest. I didn't have to install loads of things to get going.
The power button is on the top left hand corner under the lid, which means no worrying about pressing the switch or breaking the button. When the computer is on a white light comes on at the bottom left indicating its all systems go.

** Design **
I don't take it lightly when I spend a lot of money and although how it works is most important, it is also important to me that my laptop looks good. I want something that looks sharp and modern. This laptop does the trick. It has a shiny, dark grey, metallic lid and the main body of the laptop is the same colour. It looks great although smudge marks and finger prints show up a lot! In my opinion it looks very expensive and professional. With a sleek and simple design.
I find that the keyboard itself is relatively large and the extra numeric keypad usually to large laptops and desk top computers has also been squeezed in without losing any space, which is great. The laptop is quite weighty (2.6kg) so wouldn't be ideal for people who want a laptop for on the go. I bought this specifically to use at home so it is fine for me. I have noticed that you have to be a bit careful when moving it around. Because it is so heavy, the battery tends to feel a little bit loose, so no flinging about!
The HD screen is a 15.6 inches widescreen with a very clear and bright display. I find that websites especially games etc. look vivid and in perfect colour. It is great for watching films or looking at pictures and creates the perfect image. Although because of how glossy the screen is you can find that lights reflect quite a lot so you may have to adjust where you sit and the lighting around it. But a positive to combat this is that the screen goes back a lot further than most laptops, so whatever position you are in you can find the perfect angle.
Overall I really liked the simple but stunning design and it definitely gets the thumbs up from me.
** Speed **
Speed to me was very important when choosing my new laptop. I hate waiting and I hate it even more when things freeze due to taking too long. This laptop has a 2.4GHz Core i5 450M processor and I find it to run incredibly smoothly. It boots up within seconds and everything is done in a click. I can run several programmes at the same time and so far (after 7 months of use) nothing has crashed or froze. It runs everything smoothly from online games to having 5 or 6 documents open at the same time. This is perfect for my impatient self and I could not have asked for more.
Even in terms of shutting down unless updating, it takes seconds for the laptop to fully close so I never feel concerned that it has just gone into hibernation because it has taken so long in shutting down.
The speed of the laptop is also down to its 500GB hard disk. Because of the large disk space things run quick and snappy. To be honest due to previous issues with laptops I don't keep much stored anymore. So pictures and music are stored elsewhere, although I feel safe knowing that this laptop would handle my files well and still run at a good speed.
** Positives **
In my opinion this laptop has a lot going for it and I have not regretted my decision at all so far.
The sound is great which is good for me as I love listing to music on my laptop. Especially directly from the internet. The built in premium sound speakers are clear and quite loud. It does not have much bass, but this is a computer after all and not a stereo!
The Inspiron has four USB ports, one of which doubles as an eSATA port for connecting fast external storage. I didn't realise this was specifically for that purpose but now I know it is a great feature. As I said before I am not a fan of keeping my documents on my laptop so the super transfer to the external storage is right up my street.
Another major thing for me was how quickly this computer connects with my wireless router. My 2 previous models (a Samsung Netbook and Advent Laptop) were pretty slow then took a while before the actual first page was displayed. This Dell Inspiron however is brilliant. Within a few seconds it is connected and so easy to set up. I stayed at a friend's house recently and once she gave me her password for her network I was sorted. It was just as easy as being at home. A few clicks and I was away.
** Negatives **
I have very few negatives about the Dell Inspiron 15R. One is that the fan is on the left hand side of the laptop and it would be much better if it was at the back as I feel that it doesn't cool the laptop down as much as it should. It does get very hot but that is also down to the length of time I spend attached to the laptop.
The Battery lasts up to 3.5 hours which I don't think is long enough. Especially as it depends on what you are running on the laptop and your screen settings. I keep the battery in most of the time and if I was to take the laptop with me somewhere I would feel more comfortable taking the charger with me. So this adds to the point that this is not really a portable laptop.
** Price **
I bought my laptop for approximately £549.00. To be honest I have put a bit of a block on the price in my mind because it is so much money. I know you can get this particular laptop cheaper if you look around online but the prices vary from £450 to £650. So plan ahead if you can. If I didn't buy this on a spur of the moment, desperate attempt to not throw my old laptop out the window moment, then I definitely would have shopped around to get the best price.
** Recommendation **
This Laptop ticks all the boxes I wanted and after 7 months is still running as smooth as day 1. I feel comfortable that Dell knows what they are doing and knows what the consumer wants from a laptop.
It looks great, runs fast, works well and is an easy to use laptop. I would 100% recommend this to anyone who wants an all-round good quality laptop but who doesn't want it be a laptop on the go as it really is too bulky.
I like it best for its speed, great display and its brilliant coordination with wireless internet.
I am 100% happy with my purchase and the best Laptop I have had so far. Thumbs up!
Summary: A perfect laptop if you want speed and competence with an attractive design. Good All rounder.
