Dell Inspiron 1750
Advantages: large keyboard, big screen, lots of storage space
Disadvantages: very heavy,
I bought my dell inspiron 1750 about 3-4 years ago. It was my first brand new laptop, as usually I buy second hand. My old laptop was so old that the screen was warped and strange green vine-like lines had crept across it, making it very hard to see anything. I didn't have a lot of money, only what I had saved from all my writing, and this was really the best specs I could find for the price.
How is it?
Considering I am still using it now, without too much bother, I'd say it's not a bad laptop at all. I know dell can sometimes get a bad reputation, but I've had very few serious issues with mine. I'm not saying it's been the best laptop possible, but it's lasted, and it is beginning to break now, but only physically. Basically the charger died, so I bought a second hand generic one, the battery wore out so it held no charge at all, so again I bought a generic and it works just fine now, and holds several hours charge. The casing is now coming off the keyboard, and I can lift it up and see inside my laptop, and the left mouse button has collapsed.
All these sounds bad, but they're not. The casing and mouse problem is probably from very rough and frequent use, including using it for a meal tray.
The actual laptop itself works fine. I have had to re-install windows about 3 times due to a couple of serious viruses, but that's to be expected.
It still runs programs well enough, it isn't that slow like some old laptops, it still has pretty good specs and good 2GB RAM. And the screen definition is still pretty impressive.
I love the full size keyboard, I can't be doing with tiny keyboards while I'm trying to write. It also has the full number keypad on the right.
I love that (originally) the battery life was great, and I'd get several hours charge if I decided to take it outside.
I love the huge high def screen. It displays photos well and plays videos well.
Oh and it's purple, which I paid a bit extra for.
The speakers are great, not too quiet, and not too tinny.
It has a great 300GB of space. More than enough for my needs
It has 2GB ram so I can run several programs at once, without issues. Including virus scanning while researching online and typing on word.
It has three USB ports, rather than just two.
It doesn't burn my leg if I use it on my lap, unlike some laptops, like my last one that left physical red burns.
It's heavy, very heavy. I know I was trading screen size and keyboard size for weight, but I struggle to lift it on my bad days and it is very cumbersome to pack when I go away for the night.
I had charger issues, from word go it kept telling me my charger was not recognized as an official dell charger, even though it came directly from dell. I could have called dell to sort it out, but I didn't, and it didn't seem to cause many problems.
If I take it outside and it's a bit sunny, the glare on the screen can make it tough to see anything, but it's better than some.
Overall I like it, there aren't many issues, and the ones it has I can deal with. It has provided me years and years of service for a reasonable price. And although one day I know I'll need to buy a new one, I hope that isn't in the near future at all, I'm quite happy with this dell!
Summary: Good if you want a laptop that suitable for lots of typing, has a high def screen and lots of space.
