Advantages: Performance, After sales, sleek look
Disadvantages: Cost of upgrades from 'advertised' price, Decreasing battery life over time
++ Looks ++
Let's start with superficiality, shall we? This machine looks amazing. Even 2 years after I first bought it, it still retains its shiny lustre and the onyx black finish stands out a mile beside lesser more 'plasticy' counterparts.
++ Performance ++
My exact model came with a standard video card, 4 GB of Ram and 350 GB hard drive. It is lightning quick starting up and shutting down and handles music production and photo software with ease. This is more than enough for day-to-day tasks and will even tackle some of the newer PC games that are out there. But, hardcore gamers beware, this is probably not the machine for you.
One thing I've noticed recently however, is a serious decrease in battery length. I used to get over 3 hours and now would be lucky to keep it going for a little over an hour on the low power setting. That said, it is over two years old at this stage.
++ Pricing ++
One thing to keep in mind is that the price you see when advertised is nowhere near that of what you will end up paying. Once you start ticking the boxes on the website for extra (and in some cases necessary) features, the final total will be a couple of hundred pounds more than what it's advertised as.
++ After Sales ++
I've heard people saying that this is an area in which Dell falls down in. However, I haven't been able to fault them on this. Through every fault of my own, I've had to call upon them twice to repair the device, firstly following a beer induced spillage at a party, and secondly, after a clumsy fall onto a hard wood floor. Both occasions meant that the hard drive had to be completely replaced (amongst other things) and both were covered by the highly recommended accidental damage repair (can't remember exactly how much it is, roughly 30 quid or so). Within 14 days, I had the computer delivered to my door and back in action.
All in all, I cannot recommend this laptop highly enough. Its performance, reliability and catch-all damage repair warrantee mean that I'll be back for another one if and when this one decides to give up on me. Just keep an eye out on the extras if you want to keep costs down.
Summary: Great performance, reliability and repair service if needed for the price. Go for it!
