Dell Studio 15
Advantages: Well specced laptop,
Disadvantages: Battery life, overheating issues
I've had my Studio 1537 for nearly 3 years now, replacing a previous Dell that was stolen.
I picked it up at a discounted price through the Dell Outlet store with Windows Vista basic, but I have since upgraded to Vista Home Premium and then Windows 7. Comes with a lot of the usual Dell cr4pware.
Performance wise it is fine, 4GB memory (make sure you install 64bit windows to take full advantage), a decent Centrino processor (6MB L2 Cache) and a 5400RPM 320GB hard drive, bluray drive and a mediacentre remote. Pretty good build quality, mine has taken a few knocks over the years but still works fine although the case around the screen occasionally needs clipping back into place now. On the negative side though, I have had to clean out the fan as it's been clogged with dust and has caused the laptop to overheat. I don't feel the fan outlet is very well placed as it is easily blocked if you have the laptop on your lap. It would be better placed at the side than on the back edge. I've also had to replace the thermal pads on the processor etc. with thermal paste, as the pads had deteriorated so badly that the laptop was overheating even when performing very unintensive tasks.
My other gripe would be the battery life on Dells in general. My previous one had the "Battery needs replacing" warning after a couple of years, and this one after about 18 months. I can still use the laptop plugged in but if I want to take it anywhere I can probably count on about 30 minutes juice before I run out. I would have hoped Dell would have got some better batteries by now, especially as they're £100+ to replace.
Summary: Generally a well built laptop, performs well but let down by inferior Dell batteries.
