Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D

I bought this budget laptop in JUne 2004 to take on a lengthy tour of New Zealand. The machine worked well for a while and then in August 2004 the machine started to display sporadic boot up problems. It would not boot when the power lead was plugged in but would boot under battery power every time. When the power lead was subsequently plugged in sometimes the laptop would spontaneously re-boot and on other occasions would be OK. There did not seem to be any BIOS settings that would improve the situation and no BIOS updates have ever been issued by Fujitsu-Siemens for this model, that I am aware of. The Amilo D I purchased utilised the Pentium 4 2.53 ghz processor with a 15' screen. A very competent machine with an excellent ATI mobility Radeon 9000 graphics card. The screen is pretty sharp when you have got the viewing angle right. But it is not for the hard of seeing, at its best resolution the fonts are very small even when set to large. It will largely depend on what you want to use it for. Excellent for 3D gaming on the move and surfing the internet, especially on broadband where it handles video very well.
