Advantages: Build quality and price.
Disadvantages: Not the best for gaming.
Welcome to my first review! I thought about what I'd write about and decided why not write a review about the laptop I'm writing the review on!
There are two versions of this laptop, the first having an Intel Celeron CPU and 1GB of RAM, the second, which I have, has an Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU with 2GB of RAM.
As I am a PC technician I decided to go down the route of buying the laptop with the Celeron CPU and upgrading it myself.... I do not suggest that you take this on yourself but it does give me the advantage of having tried both versions of this computer.
It should go without saying that the higher spec model easily out performs the lower and it does so to a reasonable extent, certainly enough to justify the fairly small difference in price. My laptop came with Vista Home Basic installed but I have used Vista Home Premium on other PCs as well, the main differences between the Vista versions is graphic enhancements, Premium is much prettier but that's about it.
My laptop has been 100% reliable and in around nine months of ownership I have had only one fault. When it arrived in the first instance the eject button on the DVD drive didn't work. Fujitsu Siemens originally asked me to send the laptop back to them for repair which I was not happy with but as I had identified the fault they sent out a replacement DVD drive and I posted the damaged one back.... Not bad I thought and no problems since.
The negatives, which are minor, are that the wireless connection is switched off with each reboot, there is a fair amount of bundled software that I had to remove before doing anything else and that the battery life is depreciating at a rate that could be better.
It is said that you get what you pay for and as this is not a particularly expensive machine you'd be right to wonder what you'll get and what a more expensive machine will do that this won't. The main performance issue is a lack of graphics capability this machine will struggle with high end 3D gaming, not something that's a problem for me and as long as you're happy with the simpler games it won't be a problem for you. If you are after a machine that will play high end games make sure you buy a machine with a dedicated graphics chip.
So, to surmise, the faster machine is worth the extra few pounds but I wouldn't let the upgrade from Vista Basic to Vista Premium influence the choice in any way. The problems are minor and the service received from Fujitsu Siemens was very good. This is a good value laptop and I have recommended it to a couple of my customers, now I recommend it to you!
Summary: Don't play games?.... This is perfect then!
