Advantages: Available cheaply second hand. Runs well.
Disadvantages: Can overheat - I would advise buying an extra fan.
Well I am typing this review on my NC4010 so it definitely has the basics features you need when it comes to internet surfing and basic office tasks. Firstly, I should probably point out that it isn't the newest, star-spangled model available. I bought mine second hand from a well known auction site for about £120. I desperately needed something cheap and reliable for accessing the internet and doing basic tasks with office.
The laptop arrived with Windows XP and Microsoft Office preloaded. If you're not fortunate enough to get Office, there is a free programme called Openoffice available to download off the internet which does just as good a job.
The laptop is small - diddy in fact! I have to admit to being very picky when it came to choosing my laptop and a big factor in my decision was the sleek design and curved edges on this model which I feel makes it aesthetically pleasing. As for the size, it has a 12.1 inch screen and the laptop is only about 14 inches in size. If you want something that really is easily portable, then this is for you! It is lightweight and can easily be packed into a bag and taken wherever you need it. Since mine is second hand, the battery life is poor so I run it off mains power. However, you can buy replacement batteries relatively cheaply and I do intend to do this at some point.
I'm not an expert when it comes to computer specifications but this does everything I need it to and is fast enough for my needs. I did some research before buying and the 40GB hard drive and 480MB RAM are more than adequate for my current needs. I use this as my main PC at home but if you wanted if you'rea hardcore gamer, you may need to invest in another model.
For internet I use a plug in dongle which is pay as you go on the 3 network so I really can take this anywhere (once I get my new battery!)
I really love my laptop and although I do plan on upgrading it at some point, I'm certainly not in any rush to do so. The only downside I have discovered is overheating. I seem to recall having read about this in other reviews before I bought the latop and, sure enough, it does have a tendancy to get very hot! I bought a stand which has a fan incorporated into it which you plug in via the USB port and this keeps it cool and makes sure the latop runs smoothly.
If you're looking for a cheap laptop for a student or even to use as your main computer then this is an excellent, no frills model that does the job!
Summary: The NC4010 is great for surfing the internet and doing office tasks.
