HP Elitebook 2530p
Advantages: Small, powerful, robust. Brilliant keyboard
Disadvantages: None that I have found
I travel a lot and have got through quite a few laptops in my time. My Dell fell to pieces under the strain of going into and out of bags at the airport, the hotel, the meeting etc. My Sony Vaio caught fire. Some might say that my schedule is tough on laptops, and they would probably be right.
I bought the HP Elitebook because I read reviews like this that said it was well-made and durable. They were right. It has a chassis that does not bend like most I have used, it is still firmly and comfortingly rigid after almost 2 years. They also said it had a good keyboard. They were wrong - it has an extraordinarily good keyboard - far and away the best I have used on a laptop and even better than standalone keyboards. There is no flexing of the keyboard when typing, even very quickly and firmly and the feel of the keys is extremely comfortable. i once spent the whole night in an airport waiting for a flight and working the whole time - even under these conditions it remained a joy to type on after 6 hours.
In terms of performance I have not been disappointed either. It is probably not the fastest, although I purchased a RAM upgrade which means that with 3GB it is more than adequate for any business use. I strongly recommend this (as I would with any PC).
Battery life is good; 4-6 hours with the standard battery (even with wifi on) but I also purchased the high capacity battery that gives 10-12 hours. I have really spent a whole working day with no mains power and I find that very impressive.
Weight and form factor are good - this is a compact laptop that fits easily into my luggage and does not weigh too much. The screen size was chosen because I wanted something compact enough to be able to work on the plane (in economy class) and on trains. Both boxes ticked.
If you can still get this laptop then do. There may be some concerns that HP has announced it will no longer be in the hardware business, but if you need something to do the business duty cycle of 3-4 years without any problems then this is well worth considering. Highly recommended.
Summary: Superb laptop
