The Hewlett Packard HP Folio 9470m is my work laptop and I’ve had it for about 18 months now. In nearly seven years with the company this is the third model of HP laptop but the fifth actual machine I’ve had and it is by a very long margin the best of the bunch. However, it’s also not perfect - but then what laptop really is?
As it’s a work laptop, I had no input into the choice and specification. For that reason I can’t really tell you much about the technical spec but since I spend 40+ hours using it every week, I can certainly tell you what it’s like to live with. Equally since everything at work has to pass through our ridiculously overloaded network, I would be reluctant to blame the laptop for any network slowness. Equally we are running Windows 7 which wouldn’t be standard off the shelf.
The main benefit of the 9470m is that it offers a fantastic balance of weight and screen size. The size is approximately A4 and it’s classified as a 14 inch laptop and weighs about 1.6 kilos. My previous model was a 12 inch that weight a lot more. 1.6 kg is pretty good for such a large laptop and those who struggle to fit their fat fingers on smaller keyboards will most likely enjoy the more spacious 9470m. That said, there’s an annoying design fault that the touch-pad mouse is positioned in a place that almost guarantees you’ll knock it when you are typing and cause a lot of problems. This one is definitely better used with a docking station and a keyboard if you have the option to do so.
It has a Core i5 v Pro processor and a 4GB RAM. Considering my laptop holds everything I’ve done in 7 years with the business, I’m more than happy with the capacity that it offers with its 128 GB hard drive. That’s not a lot - I have 1 TB at home - but I don’t store decades of photographs on my work machine but if you want one for personal use, it may not be enough. Battery life is good and I would estimate it’s around 5-7 hours, possibly longer.
The bad things? Yes of course there are some. My main problem is the touch mouse pad which has an intermittent fault which causes it to become so erratic that you can only use the laptop with a plug in mouse when it throws one of its wobbly fits. This means I have to carry a mouse with me ‘just in case’ which I find annoying.
I use my HP EliteBook Folio 9470m for work. I use it primarily for surfing the Web and for AutoCad. It heats up quite a bit after a couple hours of use, but the laptop is a great quality laptop for the money. It provides good graphics and smooth use. I can store a lot of photos on it without a noticeable affect on the speed of the laptop.
The most annoying things I have found while using this laptop are the audio quality and the touchpad. Without headphones, the audio is not too great. It is difficult to hear anything on it even with the volume turned all the way up unless I am using headphones. The touchpad locks up a few times a week, which is easily fixed by double tapping the touchpad. It is just a bit of a hassle when I am working quickly to have to fix that.
The laptop also has a couple rubber stoppers at the bottom of the keyboard that are meant to protect the laptop's screen when you shut it, but the rubber stoppers have left several permanent marks on the laptop screen after only a few months of use. It doesn't drastically affect the screen's image quality, but it makes the laptop screen look a little dirty. It is a flaw that I hope the company fixes for future designs.
The laptop's USB ports also don't seem to be great quality. Sometimes they don't work to charge my phone. That might be fixed by just installing some new USB ports.
Overall, this is an easy to use laptop that fits perfectly in a backpack. It isn't clunky, and it looks very sleek. I'm happy to use this laptop daily for business and for pleasure.
