Advantages: Small and powerful. Quiet.
Disadvantages: Short battery life, mousepad can wear out quickly
Last March I moved house and circumstances dictated that I also needed a new computer. After deciding that I should get a laptop, incase her pals come round I can disappear off to another part of the house, the search was on.
Because my brother works for Tesco I thought I might aswell buy from there as he get's the discounts and points and they actually have a good selection at much cheaper than PC World prices. I was looking for something with a large portion of RAM and plenty of hard disk space as I had 60+GB of music stored on my old almost-ready-to-give-up-the-fight ACER laptop. Yes, I could store it all on a external HDD which I do as back-up, but it's not really convenient for updating MP3 players or travel. Anyway, this beast had 2GB of RAM and a 120GB HDD (in reality I could only use about 100GB taking into consideration the size of the OS), more than enough for my needs.
I occasionally use programs like Photoshop which munch all the resources and this wee computer took all I had to give it with ease and the screen presented an excellent picture, if a little low in resolution - but that's what you get for buy a 15" laptop. Another positive was the complete lack of noise from the machine, no matter what labour intensive program I was running I never heard any hint of fan in the background, it also never really got hot on the lap either.
Coming preinstalled with Windows Vista I was in virgin territory but it really wasn't too bad, it looks and acts very much like XP and not once did I have any issues installing software or devices such as wireless mice or cameras.
Over the last 9 months of pretty much solid use only 1 problem occured and that was the mouse pad wearing out. 9 months isn't a long time but it became so bad that we could only use a small portion of the unworn pad to move about the screen - very frustrating. Unfortunately before I could do anything about it the laptop was knocked onto the floor and the screen cracked :(
I eventually bought a newer HP laptop and later discovered that you can purchase replacement screens from ebay for about £70. 10 minutes of google searching and I found a guide for dismantling the screen and voila, it was done...still haven't ordered a new screen but half the job is done lol
Hopefully I can restore my trusty laptop to it's former glory so I don't have to wait for her to get off Bebo to do a review.
Summary: Excellent laptop that will deal with what most will throw at it.
