This laptop is quality through and through. It's big bold and beautiful!
I have had this laptop for almost a year now. It is hands down the best laptop that I have owned.
The main selling point at the time was the included blu-ray player, this along with hdmi out, means that this is still my main blu-ray player on my 37" sony television. I will continue to use it like this until recordable blu-ray becomes affordable.
It's built in 17" screen is so bright, that I often find myself watching movies just on the laptop. The downside to this bright and glossy display comes when you take it outside, even on a cloudy day it is virtually impossible to see the screen outside. This is disappointing as it can be nice sitting in the garden in the summer.
The built in speakers are fine, and even come with a mini subwoofer, although if you want real quality then plug in a pair of decent headphones and you will be immersed in whatever you are listening to.
As a games machine it was unsurpassed, I would bet that it still stands up well today. Wireless is great, I have used is all over the house/garden.
A little bit of a downside, I have had a couple keys/blanking plates come loose, a quick tap and they have remained in place ever since.
Another problem is that this laptop was very hard to find, I ended up buying it brand new on ebay, as I couldn't get hold of it elsewhere. This may still be the case, if so you can certainly grab yourself a bargain when comparing the spec with other manufactures.
As I said this machine is quality, from the metal keys, to the light up media functions (I use the volume one all the time) onto the big screen. For such a large laptop the battery life is also very good.
If you can find one, then don't hesitate to buy!
This laptop has more style that most others and feels of quality throughout. The keyboard is a full sized one including a numbner pad and finished is a silverly matt texture. Having had many laptops I have to say that this one is my favourite to date. There is no real flex throughout the keyboard. and keys feel of quality when you strike them. The keys also don't produce much noice when typing which I have found on other laptops. Above the keyboard are illuminated touch buttons for media and WLAN control. These surprisingly work very well and are not just a gimick. Sandwiched between the keyboard and the media controls are the speakers. These are covered by perforated metal which also has the 'Altec Lansing" logo a small metal plate above the number pad. The sound quality from these are great and this is added to buy the sub wooffer underneath the laptop producing a richer deaper sound than most laptops. The mouse pad is situated underneath the keyboard and has a mirror finish to it. This pad work great and the addion of a button for locking the pad from accidental use makes it one of the best I have used. What I don't like though is the fact that the mouse pad and rest below the keyboard are total fingerprint magnets. I had heard this before I bought it but greasse really does build up on the bottom rest of the laptop unlike most laptops. The Brightview screen is beautiful and it's glossy finish really does give a sharp veiwing exp[erience. This also is it's downfall, if you plan on taking this with you and using it out side you will find it near impossilbe to view in sunlight because of the glossy screen.
When it to connections there are plenty. it comes with 4 USB 2.0, e-Sata, firewire mini, 6 in 1 card reader, ExpressCard 54 slot, LAN, VGA, HDMI and HP's docking connection. When not in use the ExpressCard slot hold a remotecontrol which you can use for Windows Media Center, Hp's QuickPlay and Powerpoint among others.
The machine performance is great and good for all around multimedia. It copes well with all of adobe's creative suite 4 and well as other domaining programs. The software that comes with it is very much bloatware there are tons of useless program that come with your laptop from HP which I reccomend you do a fresh install of Vista or Windows 7 (Windows 7 works fine this this laptop as I run both operating systems on it. From what I remember I couldn't get blu-ray's to play with the programs provided so I had to install the latest Power DVD and it works perfectly. If you wish to play games on this laptop is is certainly capable of playing all the latest games and most of them at very high settings. I do advise you to get a laptop cooler or prop up the back end of the laptop and take out anything from the ExpressCard Slow (this is what I do) for cooling as it does get very warm. I have had my DV7 since March 2009 and it's going perfectly I have used it heavly when I can't get to my desktop somedays for over 20 hours non stop before shutting down.
Other notes: This has a spare HDD bay so you can add another hard drive to it (I have two in mines). This laptops support up to up to 8GB RAM (2x4GB sticks). The batterly life on this it excellent, it comes with a 8 cell battery. I uselly use laptops on a balanced setting when on battery but this one I use on high performance , full brightness wlan and bluetooth on and it still gives me two hours of use. I havn't full timed but sure if you lower the brightness and don't use it heavly you will get 4 hours or more on one charge.
