HP Pavilion G6-1381SA
Advantages: Does all the things that it should do
Disadvantages: Doesn't have many quirky additions
I made the mistake of putting my laptop in my suitcase when travelling to Las Vegas and as a result, the screen got smashed. One of my first jobs when I got home was to buy a new laptop and after a bit of careful research, I chose the HP Pavilion G series.
Being a girl, one of the first criteria I look at is the colour and this range comes in a variety of them. You can choose between red, blue purple and silver, and although they all look pretty I've got the purple one. The purple colour is shiny and metallic and you can find it all across the lid, as well as inside around the keyboard. The other detailing is black but the whole thing looks very cute and stylish.
I bought mine from Argos for £359, although this is supposedly reduced from £399. I had a free laptop bag and mouse with the computer, which should help me keep it in a good condition. It is available from a few other stores and websites too so you may find it for a bit cheaper if you shop around.
The set up was simple. You just follow the instructions on the screen and it's all done in a few minutes, without having to use any CDs and do anything complicated which was a big relief to me.
The laptop has a screen that measures 15.6 inches which is a bit smaller than my previous laptop but it is still big enough to watch DVDs on and to see what your doing properly, even with my eyesight. The picute is high quality and it has high definition with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The screen is nice and bright, even when the laptop isn't plugged in and the sound quality is good with the volume going up to a loud level.
It has a 750GB hard drive which was once of the largest memories for the price range that I was looking at so I will be able to safe lots of photos and music on my computer. It also has an inbuilt 0.3mp webcam instead of the old fashioned clip on webcam that I used to have so it's made Skyping people much easier!
It has three USB points which is great because it means you can be charging your phone, uploading photos and using your memory stick all at the same time. The laptop weighs 2.5kg which is much lighter than my old laptop and easier to carry around. The computer comes with a battery life of 4.5 hours which seems about right to me and means that you can use it on the go.
The keyboard is quite small although I find it easy enough to type on. It has bluetooth which is switched on and off by pushing a button on the keyboard so you can easily connect to the internet or your phone. The mouse is just a piece of plastic and it can be locked by pushing a circular dent, although I can't imagine ever using this feature!
The computer comes with Microsoft Windows 7 Premium and a months free Norton Antivirus Security. It also has all the usual accessories and games that come with a new laptop, although I doubt that I'll use much of them. You can do all the usual things like add different users to the laptop if you're sharing which can be given passwords so you can set your own background and keep your things private.
The only niggle that I've had with this product is that for some reason when I am browsing online, I do something which makes the screen suddenly zoom in or out. I still haven't worked out what I'm doing but I do know how to change it back now. This may just be me being a bit silly but either way, it is annoying!
All in all, this computer won't blow you away and it doesn't come with the fun and exciting features and applications of an Ipad. If you're looking for a straight forward computer to type on, browse the internet, Skype friends and to watch DVDs, then this is a really good option. It looks cute and stylish, and quite feminine and it meets all of my needs. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this laptop to someone who wanted to use it for the same purposes as I did but this may be too bland for those who want a bit more.
Summary: A laptop that lives up to all of its promises and does the job
