Lenovo G570 4334
Advantages: Decent entry level Intel Core i5 processor, 6 GB DDR3 RAM, Bluetooth, stays cool
Disadvantages: Entry level graphics card, Stock wireless card, very glossy screen
The Lenovo G570-4334 is the general practical laptop computer, though it doesn't fare too poorly in the looks department either. On the outside, you'll find a shiny, black, fingerprint magnet of a cover. This thing attracts fingerprints without even touching it. On the inside you'll discover a dark steel finish encircling the laptop keyboard. It looks quite nice, not at all what I'm used to on an everyday home use laptop. Now that I've gotten the initial physical impressions out of the way, onto the actual meat of the review.
When I turned on the laptop, I was surprised with the intensity of the glare of the screen. The sunlight shining outside my window was not directly shining on the screen, but it still produced a very obvious glare. I know I'm very handsome and what not, but I have a mirror to look at myself in. Definitely not what I like to see in a laptop screen. On the bright side, there were no dead pixels to speak of. Screen resolution rated at 1366 x 768, standard for a home use laptop.
Once I booted to the desktop screen (took about 58 seconds, standard for this type of computer), I noticed that this particular Lenovo is pretty speedy. Powered by an entry level Intel Core i5-2410M model along with 6GB DDR3-1333MHz RAM, going through explorer windows and opening various programs was zippier than usual. Minimizing and maximizing windows had an extra snap to them, and there was virtually no delay. The 750 GB hard drive offered plenty of space and is quite speed for an older 5400 RPM model, transferring my 5 GB of music in a mere 6 minutes, quite decent for again, a slower model in today's world dominated by 7200 RPM, hybrid, and solid state drives.
Graphics capabilities were also above par. The AMD Mobility Radeon 6370M graphics card, an entry-level graphics card by modern standards, was able to play 1080p video with out a hitch. Other benchmarks included Left 4 Dead 2 on medium detail settings at 30 fps, Batman: Arkham Asylum on high detail settings at 34 fps, and Call of Duty: Black Ops on medium detail setting at 23 fps. During the 1080p video testing, temperatures of the laptop never rose over 60C; and during gaming, never above 75C. Very respectable for a budget model graphics card. Lenovo has really improved their laptop interior design this time around, and managed to keep a small form factor laptop fairly cool.
As for battery life, at 30% brightness, Power-saving mode, word processing and web surfing, I got about 5:07 of laptop usage. At 60% brightness, Balanced power profile, word processing and web surfing, I got just under 4 and a half hours. At 100% brightness, High Performance profile, word processing and web surfing, I got about 3:45. This is about average for this type of laptop.
Minor gripes I have had with this laptop are the old style standard keyboard layout, I much prefer a chiclet style layout. The keyboard also has no backlight, but that's to be expected in such a cheap computer. The speakers are very weak, and the sound gets heavily distorted and tinny at about 80% volume. No matter, however, there are headphones for that. All in all, this is a very respectable consumer laptop for the price, and I recommend it for those with a small budget and still want some multimedia features in their PC.
Summary: Good overall basic consumer laptop
