Sony Vaio Z600TEK ... never get through the 20GB hard disk but it's nice to have and does not add much to the cost. The other great thing about it for a mobile user is that you can plug directly into LANs and be up and running on other people's networks without having to go through all sorts of modem, DNS pain. Convenient - highly mobile - and a very reasonable specification. Is it worth the £2200 I paid on Tottenham Court Road? Cheaper would have been nicer but I've no complaints. Actually I do have a gripe - battery life is a paltry 1 hour usually. You can buy an excellent five hour battery (c£260) though which will ensure you never need plug in during meetings. ... Sony Vaio Z600TEK ... this without problem. It is actually quite nippy moving around menus, & gives Win2k plenty of headroom. The 128mb RAM seems to be comfortable. Many of the super compact systems I have seen are literally way too hot, and will cook your lap within a few minutes. The HEK runs cool and quiet. I found the old 505SN noisey, and became very concious of fans and hard disks powering up & down. The low heat output is probably responsible for the vastly improoved battery live. The stand ard battery gives a genuine 2-3 hours, compared with 1hr at a push for the 505SN. Personally, I do not find the JOG... Sony Vaio Z600TEK ... of the functionality within the smallest area possible. The array of connection options allow this to be a workhorse of any notebook arena. Connections for memorystick, firewire, usb, serial, parallel, LAN (internal) and modem (internal) allow connection and interoperability all through the world. With a good battery (lasts 1.5hrs) and a crystal screen this laptop runs Windows 2000 fast and solid. Good storage (20GB) only let down by external floppy and CD. But this can be allowed as the whole lot weights in at 1.7Kg. Great for lugging around. The only criticism, well two really. 1) Only a single height PCMCIA socket and 2) no Infrared! ...
