Every time I budget for a new laptop, I always aim around the £400 mark. Why? Because from experience you get a little of everything, because I do a little of everything. I'm no tech-wizz, so all I can comment on is the overall performance of the machine for what the average at-home user would look for.
It's a sleek-looking machine, no doubt about that. It has a glossy black/blue lid which looks good. The screen is really good quality, and DVD playback and downloaded movies look really nice and sharp. The rest of the unit is your average grey plastic, but in no way does it look cheap. My only real qualm is that it's a little on the heavy side.
Hard drive - 500GB is packed into this laptop, which I'd say is fairly standard. I have movies, music, photos and games installed and I've barely taken a bite out of the overall capacity.
Memory - 6GB, which I was really impressed with. You can expect your sessions to run smoothly, and flicking to and from programmes is seamless. Very quick indeed!
Operating System - Windows 8 comes a standard. I, for one, can't stand Windows 8 at all. I can see where they're going with it though, but it's just not for me and personally I dont think suited to a non-touchscreen device. You can expect, several times per session, to accidently swipe the mousepad in such a way that it switches to another program. I've used Windows 8 on a touchscreen laptop and works perfectly well, but not so much on a regular laptop.
Other bit and bobs - Webcam, its not the greatest but it works! HDMI port, really usefull for connecting your laptop to your HDTV. Graphics, considering its a plain built-in graphics chip it gives really good results. I haven't played any really recent games on it though. Built-in SD card reader, ideal for instant connection to your digital camera photos. Bluetooth connection, well this worked OK for me until it just failed to work altogether.
You can easily get lost in laptop specs, reviews and such, but I think as long as you know what you need a computer for, you'll find something for a good price. That's what I did here.
